Can Breakfree CLP be used as a patch lube for roundballs and has anyone used it as such? :hmm: I hope this is not a stupid question. Thanks

I've heard it's bad for barrels, but I can't remember why. Olive oil works great!

Sduve,

I have used CLP in my own weapons and those belonging to the US Gov't for over 20 years in every imagineable climate. I have never had any reason, or seen any evidence that would compel me to switch to something else. I have never tried to use it for a patch lube but rather as a final protectant. I see a lot of strange ideas regarding patch lube, cleaning and protective coating on this site. I clean with hot soapy water (a little dish detergent and a scoop of tsp) rinse with hot water and dry with a compressor. I then oil all parts with clp. I have guns that only see daylight every couple years and I have never had a long term storage issue or protection issue with CLp. I did try "nature lube" for a short while but found the level of protecion unsatisfactory.

Yes,but you will have to swab inbetween each and every shot.I just used a spit patch in and out and then fliped over and done again.I think i was using .015 patches.they were soaked and then the stack of 20 or so was squeezed in a c-clamp inbetween 2 small boards. The result was a consistant patch with very little clp left in em.i think i used a .015 down on the powder charge also before the patched ball.
it shot good.I probably would have got the same results used the same way with about any kind of oil.
Just dont try it with out swaben between shots, like most petro products it will cause rock hard fouling even with more clp used on the patch.
