I like to ask anyone have idea what patch material would be around .022
I use pillow material blue and white .017 with .490 R/B out of my flinter I would like to go to .022 and see how the gun shoots.I hate to buy a box of .495 R/B :idunno:

I got some off-white "canvas" at the Walmart sewing section that mikes right at .022 after I ran it through the washer and drier. If it was a little "harder" it would probably mike a little thicker, but it compresses down to that using my usual pressure with the mike. I'm like you, preferring to go with a thicker patch rather than a larger ball and thinner patch.

You might want to try .020 patches. .022 might be tighter than you're thinking it will be. Remember, the patch will go all around the ball. .005 thicker patch will be .010 wider load down the barrel.

took my micrometer to the fabric store, got some ticking, black and white striped. It is .022. I had to drop down in ball size from .49 to .48 and from .53 to .52, but I'm happy with the results..Hank

Check some denim.

+1

Ya gotta look at the cut edges though, some of it has what's called "poly guide fibers", about every inch or so is a single strand of poly thread. Even though the top of the bolt say's 100% cotton.
Been using Denim for years know, I never have been able to figure out the almost OCD rage over "ticking"!
If guy's want to limit themselves sobeit.

Be sure to check "crushed" thickness, it's a big deal. Squeeze the caliper on the fabric,,that's what happens when you wack it in the barrel against a ball.

The brown cotton duct sold at wally world runs from .020 to .022. (At least it did the last time I got some )

I like the way fabric store help starts to cluck and flutter when you break out the micrometers. :applause:

:rotf: Ya that's fur sure! Tough part here in Minn is if you by the fabric to make clothing there is no sales tax,,if it's for something else they tack on 7%,
It usually works if you start the diatribe about historical re-enactment, period correct and hand stitching an stuff, but ya can't say the word patching or mention shooting,, :haha:
It's not easy comming up with a story, on the spot, to save 75 cents when some crafty ole bird is lookin at ya over the top of her specticals.
"Honest Maam', this canvis is for a pair of pant's, fur trade era!"

I bought some denim and pillow ticking last night in walmart it was like 10:00Pm. The lady said "Doing a school project?" "Nope, I shoot black powder guns." I don't think she knew quite what I was talking about anyways she was half a sleep and was having trouble measuring the material. It was pretty funny.
