Now that our season is over I want to play a little with patch material. My question is would it make a difference if patches are made ahead of time square instead of round or is it better to cut after started in the barrel?Have used Ox Yoke in the past but want to give pillow ticking and denim mat. a try. Will be using bees wax, lard and olive oil for lube.I think it is a 60/40 mix with a table spoon of olive oil I have.

FWIW...

All my patches are round precut/prelubed commercially made patches...both plain cotton patches and stronger pillow ticking patches...no problems with accuracy because they're precut.

I've experimented with some home made square precut/prelubed patches to see first hand if there was a difference (in accuracy) and I didn't see any differences.

I recently have been cutting my own patches, from pillow ticking material. I have been pre-cutting them, square. I also have used pre-cut, pre-lubed, round, T/C patches, in the past. Both .015" cotten and .018" pillow ticking. I find that my own pillow ticking patches, are as accurate.

"is it better to cut after started in the barrel?"

No!

Square cut patches work as well as anything.

I did some shooting this past Sat. was going to hunt hogs but wind was blowing about 40mph. Anyway, I had some round pre-cut {Walmart material I cut and lubed} .008" linen patches I lubed with heated Bore Butter and some Ox Yoke lubed round patches at .010".
I shot .530" and .535" Hornady balls with 90grs. 3f. All loads I could start with fingers..the .008" patch and .530" balls are borderline too easy to start. But with my old eyes I couldn't hardly tell the difference in any of the loads accuracy wise. Here's the target I shot from 50 to 85 steps. This represents at least one of each load.
I just can't see my sight and target good enough at over about 40yds. to get too picky. The one thing I think I need to do is worry about leading with such a thin patch. I was only able to find one .008" patch due to wind and it was pretty frazzled.
I've tried .018" pillow ticking and it's boarder line hammer time..would end up breaking my hickory rod if I went that route.

 I cut mine kinda square. There easier to cut and mine vary in size. I find no difference in the way it shoots.I use pillow ticking and have tried many homemade lubes.

I use square patches, that I've precut myself, and have never seen any difference between them, round patches and patches cut at the muzzle. I also find the square patches to be easier to center on the muzzle than round, precut patches. The little bit of extra fabric at the corners makes good "ears" that you can fold over and hold to the side of the barrel with a finger, to keep the patch from sliding off center, or blowing away when it is windy.

Good question. Hope you don't mind if I piggy-back on with one of my own.

As I was shooting with round pre-made, pre-lubed commercial patches this weekend past I noticed that on occasion as I started the ball the patch would end up not centered inside the barrel.

Will an uncentered patch affect accuracy?

i've found as long as the ball has patch all the way around in full contact with the bore it shoots the same, at least for me.

I use triangle patches myself, too many years of kids with cloth diapers I'm guessing... :haha:

Really though, pre-cut round ones do fine for me, however, you will have less waste material with square patches...

Less waste material but you will use more lube.
I cut my patches square with a rotary cutter and then cut them round using two washers as a guide.
I do this just to save lube.
Am I cheap or what!?

A penny saved is a penny earned
If I save a few thousand pennies I can get a new rifle :)
