I have one rifle with a patchbox that I never use. They are nice decoration but whenever I have used them they manage to come open at the wrong time an lose whatever is in there. When I build a rifle I just don't put one on.

In my TC's which are on the small side I carry an extra new flint,a patch worm connected together with a piece of rubber tubing a ball screw/puller and a few dry patches to keep it all quiet when I walk. Not much room but never fails on a woods walk or 3D walk shoot I end up pulling the ball puller out to yank some ones "I'm sure I put powder in it "loads out.Not that that has ever happened to me LOL..Ray

Depending on which gun it is.....
mine have one or more of the following...
..spare nipple, spare flint and pad, ear plugs, cleanout screw, 8x32 stud on a short bolt(stuck rodpuller,I use the10x32end normally)..
any of these get wrapped in patches or materialasto not rattle.

I've heard of the patch box being filled with grease for patch lube.
TOTW had/has a rifle listed there with a hole drilled in the butt and filled with grease. No patch box, just grease. Weird.
I opened my patch box once just to see if the hinge worked properly.
I've never stored anything in it.

i have a harpers ferry. it is spring loaded and stays shut. so i have a flint and a take down tool from a trapdoor that works for all the screws and springs in fact it could have been made for the rifle except for the date. a spair frizen and main spring.

I have put one thing or another in cap or patchboxes in the past, but no longer use them I have one gun left that has a woden lid, I do not use it but it definately needs to be there to make the gun "complete" IMHO it is an early Virginia Smoothrifle.

Yep when I have one I use them. I put cleaning worms/patches or tow in them... possibly a turn screw and an extra flint or two.

while deer hunting I keep M&M's in my sliding wood patch box they sure come in handy at times.
Ephraim

I keep prelubed, precut patches in mine. I only use them when I'm trying to shoot fast though. Otherwise, I cut at the muzzle.

They melt in your mouth, not in your patch box...I hope.

:haha: I may try that Ephraim.

Actually planned on wrapping a few things in a piece of leather and store inside my patchbox but just didn't get to it this year. I do intend to though.

I carry a spare flint and ball puller in my wood patchbox. Never felt it was too big. I wrap them in a couple cleaning patches.

Now, I carry cleaning patches, spare flints, and a ball puller in my bag. But somehow, I have found myself without each of those items in the past, hence their inclusion.

I love the idea of earplugs. Those will go in next.

I keep getting these little lines on my fore head when I think about patch boxes. They require considerable effort to install, so I figger there must have been a good reason to have them on a gun. Were they truly used or were they just a fashion statement of the times. I've read that the patch box makes the longrifle truly american, so I keep going HHHMMM,HHHMMM, and another line appears. But I do enjoy reading what you guys put in there, or don't whichever the case may be. :hmm: :hmm:

The original owner of my rifle kept beeswax in it. I know that because I had to clean it all out when I bought the rifle. I use it to carry 1 flint, 1 flint leather, 2 asprins, 1 spare vent pick (in case I lose the one on my pouch), and a feather that I use to plug the vent. Mine is pretty secure in that I have never had it open accidentally.
