Anyone heard of using Osnaburg cotton for patching material? I saw it a Walmart it mikes out at .016" It looks like a light tan colored linen.

pure cotton will work. polyester cotton blends won't work. Just because it is labeled 100% cotton doesn't always mean that it is.I once bought some cloth that was labeled 100% cotton, but it burned/melted like a poly blend. I used it to make cleaning patches!

I don’t even like the blends for cleaning patches.
Striped pillow ticking is always my first choice if I can find the right thickness.
Am not aware of any ticking ever being made that was anything but 100% cotton.
I prefer a smaller diameter ball with a thicker patch that holds more lubricant.

I set fire to a small piece. It burned with no sign of melting, but it does seem to be a loose weave at least it is not as tight as pillow ticking.

I just picked up two yards of duck cloth from JoAnn fabric. It mic's .020 before washing, is tight weaved, all cotton and tough as all get out. I've used it before after running out of my favorite shirt felt and it was excellent for patching .

What actually happens when you do this? Does melted polyester wind up in the bore, does the patch burning up result in no spin? What is the actual damage?

I had some left over from a shirt my wife made. I used some of it for shooting patches. I am always looking that patch material that shoots best in all rifles. It shot OK. I have better/best results with a tighter weave tough canvas lightly lubed with Mr. Flintlock or Moose Milk. I shot 10 shots at 50 yds. The 9 was a result of getting distracted and not cleaning between shots.
I picked up the patches after each shot.
The bottom 5 patches were shot on another target without cleaning between shots. I also smoothed up the crown before shooting this 10 shot target.
