Well, I am almost out of patching material - I got a bunch of denim - it's way too thick. Any other suggestions - there are no material shops nearby.

I could mail order it from Track but was hoping to support the local economy as much as possible.

What have you guys used for improvised patche material in the past that worked well?

There is a Walmart in Waco, and several fabric stores.Or Gander Mountain in Corsicana,Cablelas in Fort Worth,Bass Pro Shops is up there too.

Check out the Mussleloading Acuracy form and the thread on patch ing material. There is lots of good information there. You may also want to invest in a micrometer for measuring patch material thickness.

Would be no problem in Waco. I guess I didn't relate my new location very well. I am in Timber Lake, SD, I come here every year for 3 months to train dogs on the prairie. The nearest town of any size is Mobridge, SD. They have a thrift store with old clothing - and I know enough to get 100% cotton, but what weave works best is still a little foggy - always was easy before just bought pillow ticking.

The closest Big towns are Bismarck, ND and Aberdeen, SD - although Pierre, SD could have it too.

The guys in the wilderness out here in SD must buy bulk and not shoot too much I think :v

I use that drill cloth Davey listed, it will patch everthing I own(20's) guns. I use deer tallow for lube. Dilly

I don't throw any Tee shirt out any more as long as its 100% cotton. This is what I do. Sometimes the tee shirts are thin so I double them. And that demin material "100% cotton" thats to thick. I put that between the powder charge and the patch, roundball. It works for me.
I don't throw anything away now thats 100% cotton. If I don't shoot it out the barrel, I use it to clean the barrel.

The last piece of drill cloth I got from J'anns was .018 many times their ticking and other fabrics vary from bolt to bolt, it is best to measure every time you buy.

Well you asked for this so here it is.

You wont find it in Jo Anns or Wal Mart but at art supply houses.

Stuff is called Belgin Linen. Comes on a bolt 5 feet wide and is a bit pricey. This is actually the material a painter would spread over a wood frame to paint a picture on. That is to say a picture is painted on a canvas made of Belgin Linen not cotton.

From the shooter friend of mine he explains that Cannon cartridges are made of this stuff since it is so much more clean burning that cotton which probably makes sense if you are shooting a 10 pound shot every 30 seconds in Gettesburg.

I made up a batch for my 50 cal TC Firestorm to try against Pillow ticking and it seems to load smooothr. Seems to work better to. I will try it soon in my GM 62, Smooth bore with a .60 RB I cast myself.
