Has anyone attempted to patch their shot charge so that the cloth may act as a shot cup? If so, what kind of results did you get?

Havent tried it. Thought about it and discussed it with Bob Spencer in a few emails. He said he would probably try it, but never heard back. If'n one were to try it, I would suggest a lubed patch and a mild load to start, only because I fear there might be a bunching of the charge where it compresses. The cloth might crumple and cause an increase in chamber pressure. Don't know if what I'm saying is correct, but one has to wonder if it hasn't been written about, is it because it was tried and didn't work. I can't imagine over the last few centuries that it wasn't tried. So I have to assume it didn't offer an appreciable advantage.

i use cloth instead of paper in my turkey loads, but i still use o/p cards and a cushion. the only reason i do, is because i use paper for my small game load shot charges, and cloth keeps me from mixing them up. also, i used it for a little more protection when i was using hevishot with a waa20 wad. the cloth held up better and kept the shot from pinholing the wad. i never thought it patterned better, but i bet it would be quicker loading with lubed cloth and only an o/p card. probably wouldnt need an o/s card...

I had a similar thought about using TC's 2.5" prelubed "Cleaning & Seasoning" patches...but as soon as I tried it I discovered it wouldn't just work casually as the material puckers up all around the muzzle when you try to push the center into the bore so you could pour shot.

I had the thought that a large plastic tube (like Burger King's huge Oreo Dessert Straw they call the 'pipe' ) could be used to push the patch down an inch or so and help keep the puckering flattened out against the bore walls, then pour the shot through the tube, then slide the tube back up and out...haven't tried it yet though.

If you want to "patch" shot this will do it. The dashed line represents a 14 gage fiber wad. You can glue the patch to the wad or load seperate. I prefer the former. You have to to use a fair amount of lube so the cloth will adhere to the barrel walls while your pour your shot charge.
