I understand Colt made (roughly) three different models of the Patterson pistol, pocket, belt, and holster. I "assume" by holster it was meant the saddle holsters of a horse, but how were the belt model's carried? Were slim jim's around this early? Just stuck through the belt?

The book "Packing Iron" shows only one holster for a Patterson. It's a slim-jim style that is basically a piece of soft leather folded over and sewn to match the contour of a pistol.

Remember that Colt's first revolver was a five shot .36 cal revolver with a concealed trigger, that dropped down when you cocked the hammer. It was for these guns that the ' Slim Jim" holster was designed. The Walker was carried in heavy skirting leather buckets, or loops, on the saddle, as they were too heavy to carry on a belt. If Colt made a pocket patterson, it is news to me. Someone may have sawed off the barrel on that original Patterson colt, but I am not aware that the factory produced any short barreled, " pocket model". Years later, several short barreled variations were produced of the 1851, 1801, and 1861 colt revolvers. The 1849 was made in a small caliber, and some men carried that in LARGE pockets, but I don't think that really fits the definition of what we understand to be a pocket pistol, today.

The pockets are usually called "baby" Patersons, do a search and you can see them. Wilsons book has them:

all different sizes. .28, .31, and .36

They had ( the Texas Rangers ) about 20 of those little buggers at the museam in Waco till they cleared out all the old guns,"got nothing to do with Texas Rangers" the biggst smaller than a pack of cigs, and not the 100s :rotf: FRED :hatsoff:

I know about the ' Baby Patterson", but was it really a " Pocket pistol"? The ones I have seen had at least a 6 inch barrel, even in the smaller calibers. Maybe we have to stretch the definition of "Pocket", no? I can see this being carried in the pocket of a great coat, or, as Earp did, in a modified, leather-lined pocket in his suit coat, but not in any pocket as we know them today.

I this the Baby in this picture would fit in a pocket. .28 caliber with a 2 1/2" barrel

Okay, you got me. I had never seen a gun with that short a barrel that hadn't been sawed off after it left the factory. Nice collection of colts, BTW. Thanks for sharing them with us.
