I've shot a Colt cap and ball for years but it is a late model 1862. I was wondering about a Patterson (I've never seen one).

Some later Pattersons had a loading lever mounted on the gun, much like a Walker.

But most of them had a separate lever, as do most reproductions made today.

I searched youtube to see how it was done with the separate lever, and there were none. The youtubers chickened out and used a regular wooden starter.

Has anyone seen an online video of loading a Patterson with the real separate loading lever? I would like to see how it is done. Apparently there is a trick to doing it right.

I have two one with and one without the loading
lever. On the one without, remove the barrel,
pour the power in one chamber, add ball, incert
the pointed [screwdriver]end in the wedge slot
with the rammer against the ball and press the
handle part down...They like to break at the
handle part so I threaded both pieces and put an
8/32 screw inbetween...works fine but I use a
loading devivce for all my cap-n-ball guns.

Thats how you do it. Mine also broke so I also use a loading machine. I did go bnack and and buy 2 more of the leaf loading levers just so that I had one. actually I think it is easier to just remove the cylinder and use a loading machine.
