Just left a local shop lookin for BP magic pipes.

They had a TC Renegade .50 for $149 with a dang scope drilled and mounted 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️.

Stock isnt the prettiest but definitely not the worst I ever seen.
Front sight has fiberoptic.. rear looks standard to me anyways. From what I could see with a flashlight of theres.. the bore had some light rust. Grooves looked ok from the light I had.

Million dollar question is should I go and rescue this rifle.... fling the scope in a dumpster.... and give it the proper TLC and bring it back to life.

I tried haggling them down from the $149 tag and lowest they will go is $140 plus tax which is kinda silly to me. Looks like $100 gun at best.

Thoughts?

Seems to me the $100 guns have magically becomes $200 guns with T/C selling out the last of their spare parts and inflation creeping up the cost of everything. So, the price doesn't seem bad too me. I would normally say buy it, but personally cannot stand it when someone drills holes in a barrel for a scope mount. Far too many times I've found the holes drilled all the way into the barrel. I would pass on since the stock isn't nice and the barrel questionable.

If it's as you describe, with a decent bore and shallow scope mount holes, go back and buy it. Price is fine if all else is good.

I wanna go back with a lighted nock to really get a better look at the bore. I could only see down a inch or so with the flashlight they let me use. That will determine if it comes home or not. Also the nipple was blocked up with something so will need to bring a nipple wrench as well to see what the bolster looks like.

A rough lookin rifle doesnt bother me any if the gun is a good shooter.

It's gonna look BAD. Don't necessarily let that discourage you.

While you’re at it shine a small flashlight over the screw holes while looking down the bore. If the holes go into the bore even a little you will see light in the bore. I have bought a couple of set screws from a local gunsmith, even our local Ace hardware sells gunsmith set screws. They may not be flush to the barrel but look better than holes.

I have the same disdain for scope mount holes drilled in traditional muzzleloading rifle barrels. Just passed on a nice TC Pennsylvania Hunter for that reason. Right beside it was a TC White Mountain with a scope and see through rings mounted on it. Does not look to have been shot much if at all. Passed on that as well.

Yea this rifle has the weaver style rings with some unknown scope on it.

Yes and double yes! At that price it'd be a great little brush gun or as others have suggested, pass along to someone who might be interested in muzzleloading but, can't dump a fortune to get started out. :thumb:

If the barrel is drilled and tapped for the scope base stay away from it. I fixed one for a man somtime back. I wound up having to get him a new barrel. The holes were to deep.

p.s. do not refinish the stock
p.p.s. the holes drilled in T/C made barrels have always been an issue even from the factory, a depth of .125 in their 1" barrel is the absolute maximum to be considered for a re-bore up too .62 smooth.
(as heard from one of the forum recommended pro's)
