Anyone have one? Like's and/or dislikes? Just trying to find a good maker that wont also break the bank.

Pecatonica River doesn't build guns, they offer component sets or "kits".

Their primary business is preshaping rifle stocks which they supply directly to customers or wholesale to other outfits like Track of the Wolf.

The do make fine precarve stocks and stand behind their work.

Don't know if that was what you were looking for.

Enjoy, J.D.

I really don't think you can go wrong with PRL. I've gotten several stocks and parts from them and they definately stand behind their work and are great people to work with.

It's almost always give and take. The less you pay, the less you get.

The more expensive "kits" will likely have more done to the wood, better hardware, swamped or other custom barrel and generally do not require as much work/time to complete.

All that being said, I would have no problem going with Pecatonica or Tip Curtis for a basic "kit". But you should really look at the offerings from Chambers, Caywood and North Star West before making up your mind. They may cost a little more but.....

Enjoy, J.D.

watch caywood. get it before you pay

Thanks for the heads up! I build so they would not be getting any of my money...for a gun anyway. The locks I have handled sold by them have been of very good quality though.

Enjoy, J.D.

I have 4 kids so a $1,200 kit is way out of the question, unless I wanted to go trekking, permenatly that is :hmm: Lol

North Star West sells a Northwest Trade Gun kit with a 30" barrel for just $795 delivered.

They have different barrel length and gauge options too. As well as different guns.

I have not used them myself but is seems like a value.

Enjoy, J.D.

I would check out Clay Smith for a smoothbore kit. He has recently come out with some of his trade guns in kit form. They look like a great value to me, I am desperately trying to convince myself I don't need another smoothbore!

Same for Mike Brooks. He offers a Type G or Carolina gun kit.
Mike is no longer offering that gun as a kit. In the white and complete gun only.

He is however offering a Virginia Klette style rifle in kit form for $700 and might cut a deal if ordered in a smoothbore. Don't know.

Brad Emig at Cabin Creek offers a Colonial Fowler kit for $840.

Pecatonica river only wants $540 for their fusil de chasse kit and a little less for their trade gun. I know you get what you pay for but on the same hand when you can't afford to pay more you get nothing.

You said it - you get what you pay for.

PR has some good parts sets and some which are not correct by any stretch. (I had the misfortune of getting one that is not so correct.)

If doing this over, I would call Tip Curtis and see what he can do on a plain wood fowling piece. Just save longer and get something that you will not need to replace in a few years.

We're just offering you the options you might not be aware of. If the advice is not wanted or appreciated we can simply stop now.

I am sure you will be happy with your Pecatonica River, they are good outfit.

Enjoy and good luck, J.D.
