I want a rifle that could take down a deer if I wanted. Would a .40 caliber rifle shooting a Lee R.E.A.L, for example, be adequate? I don't imagine a .40cal PRB would do the job reliably or humanly.

Yes a forty will do the job.You will need to be able to do yours though  I took a deer with a 40 cal PRB a couple of years ago DRT and George did a good write up about his hunt with one last year I believe it was. There are lots of posts about this on the site. Some folks use double ball loads and another has a maxiball style conical he uses.I've started shooting some 401 sized wad cutters from my reloading of a pistol with promising results in my TVM s.MTN rifle.I have a few of the MAXIBALL style conicals to try but haven't started yet.Even though 40 cal can be used for deer it's not my first choice Good luck

If you keep your range at 75 yards or under, a .45 caliber is nice deer rifle. They have more power than a .40. Round balls, Lee R.E.A.L., T/C Maxi Balls and Hornady Great Plains Bullets are much easier to find. Just something else to think about :v

.40cal conicals are next to impossible to find. That puts a major damper on that idea. Next Question, should I get .50 or .54? I can get a .54cal kit now, which is a plus, while I'll have to wait for who knows how long for a .50cal. Thanks y'all!

Also can anybody compare the triggers on the GPR with it's set trigger setup and the Trade Rifle's single trigger?

Before you order that kit from Dixie take a look at this site and compare the price to their GPR kit. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/department.asp?dept=MUZZLELOADERS&dept2=RIFLE

The only Pedersoli's I own are a Bess and a pistol. Both are good guns.
I own a few Lyman GPRs now and have owned several others along with several non-Lyman guns built by Investarms. Every one has been very accurate and reliable. Their flint locks are not perfect but can be managed to make them pretty good.
My favorite Investarms/Lyman is the GPR by a wide margin.

The advice others have given to try and handle all of the rifles and decide which one fits you best is good advice.

My vote goes to the .54 over the .50 caliber. If you cast your own balls anyway they will still be cheap. If you're really cheap you could always build a trap to catch your lead and cast it again.

The single triggers I have had were good. I like the set triggers better. The Lyman set trigger pulls kinda hard but makes the main trigger pretty darn decent.
For around $40 you can buy a Davis Deerslayer trigger upgrade that is a virtual drop-in for the GPR and is REALLY nice. It's made for T/C but fits Lyman too.

as I own both a pedersoli and a Lyman ...I would say that either is a great choice for starting out. My lyman is a .50 cal flint and its a great shooting rifle...easy to handle easy on the shoulder! my pedersoli is no different only a bit longer....if i had to choose one ..id choose my lyman...plus they come in a kit and they are easy and fun to build! plusthey look great too

i'd use a .54 if most strictly for hunting, else a .50 will do just fine for both hunting and range work with less lead required.

Would the Davis Deerslayer also fit a Trade rifle?

Sadly, I doubt it. I'm a sincere fan of the Davis trigger for GPR's and GPH's, but have been told they won't work on the Lyman Deerstalker and Trade Rifles. On the plus side, the single triggers on those aren't as bad as a lot of other single triggers on the market.

The GPR set trigger is great for range work. If you pull the main trigger, without setting it first, it's rather stiff. The Trade Rifle's single trigger has a nice, smooth pull, which is a pkus in the hunting field. Just my thought. By the way, check out DNR Sports: http://www.dnrsports.com/muzzleloading/muzzleloader-accessories/rifles-kits . Best prices on Lyman I've found

If only you would of posted that 20mins sooner, lol :shocked2: ! I ordered a Trade rifle for $408 with shipping. D&R with shipping would of been $385. A $23 dollar difference isn't going to kill me. I can't believe my Google-fu let me down. Thanks everybody for your advice!

i ordered a trade from DNR over a month ago simply because of the price. the day after doing the online order i get a call from DNR saying the online price is incorrect, lyman just upped their prices across the board and if i wanted the trade they'd sell it to me for $390, not their advertised $360 - i agreed, since that price was still the cheapest i'd seen.

that $360 price is still on their website after well over a month ... :hmm: a "come on"? :hmm: :nono:

as i typed above, the DNR online Lyman Trade price is bogus, they're really selling it for $390 + $25 shipping, so you got the better deal for sure.

great rifle, btw - you'll love it i'm sure

I went ahead and ordered a RMC touch hole liner. I figured that It couldn't hurt to go ahead and maximize reliability. I have a couple English flints from Track of the Wolf and 4lbs of Goex 3f so I should be good to go!

You won't be disappointed with the RMC vent.. I was getting fair amount of pan flashes with Lyman's vent.. I haven't had a single one since the replacement. Before I had to place the prime at the hole and use a fair amount of powder. Now, it takes a dab and I place it away from the hole at the end of the pan. Now goes boom everytime.

i think for most locks, 1/16" (.0625"), give or take a few thousands of an inch, has well been proven to be optimum. drilling out a s/s touch hole to a larger diameter is easy, just did that with the lyman trade rifle. i also have a few new spare vents for both of my flinters.
