Yes, wood dowels work.
You can put a nail in the bottom to hold into the ground.
You'll need to sit down and figure out what height is best for you so you're so your back is straight.
I attach piece of cord on mine at the cross. That way when you put your rifle down you pull the slack out Then you can have that cord in your left hand under the forearm.
This helps stabilize the sticks.
