Percussion caps

Which type of percussion cap do I use with my layman great plans .50 cal.

The typical CCI No.11 Magnum percussion cap that I use with T/C muzzleloared does not fit nor fire when used with my layman.(the nipples are different) I read the layman user's guide and I could not find the information I'm looking for reference percussion caps.

Change the nipple.

Thanks, just called layman and they said change the nipple, it takes the No# 11 just fine......this is the price I pay for being a newbee........I don't have a ball puller and now have a charged 50 cal in the gun cabinet.

Do I take the rifle apart to clear the charge or wait to get a ball puller? this thing is taking on its own life.........thanks jerry

Unless someone has changed it from the factory nipple (such as converting it to 209 or musket) or it is damaged, your rifle should take #11 caps.

BTW, I find that CCI Magnums give way more bang (and flying metal fragments) than one needs to ignite real blackpowder. I stick with the regular (non-Magnum) CCI #11 caps when there's a choice.

If the caps aren't popping, you probably have either a hammer alignment problem or maybe even a problem with the lock mechanism.

I've found that my GPR only likes the Lyman nipples. I've tried replacements with Hot Shot and Knight Red Hot nipples, but they stand about 1/16" taller over the bolster than the OEM nipples.

It appears that that is enough to prevent my hammer from coming forward far enough to reset the lock after firing (i.e., the lock doesn't know it's done firing and won't accept a cock). It's also enough to prevent the hammer from landing flat on the cap.

I've tried filing the non-OEM replacements shorter, but because nipples are tapered, they become too wide for the caps to fit.

So if replacing the nipple with a new factory nipple (available through Lyman) doesn't fix your problem, it's unlikely that trying another brand would either.

Get yourself a ball puller, or get a CO 2 discharger, you'll need one anyway for when you forget to put the powder in first. If you use the discharger be sure to point it in a safe direction because the ball will come out with a good bit of force.
Neither requires the gun to be taken apart.
Just my two cents.

I'd just stick a card in the muzzle to indicate it is loaded and leave it untill you get a new nipple, which will be 6mm, not 1/4x28. Black powder is no more dangerous in the barrel than in the can and it won't "go bad", so long as it is kept dry. :grin:

not to oversimplfy things ,but has anyone chucked a nipple in a electric drill or drill press and used a file to turn down the nipples to fit the caps. I have done this many times and it has always worked for myself. just go slow and don't take off too much metal.

Switching caps is one line of defense that works pretty good. Instead of the regular CCI #11 or the CCI Magnum #11 percussion cap. the better choice would be RWS Plus/Dynamit Nobel #1075 Percussion Caps, they are hotter still. The next thing to do would be to change nipples. The MSM Spitfire Nipple gives a small boost in performance over factory installed nipples or the competitions brands like HotShot or RedHot. You can get then at[url] Cabelas.com[/url]. You want the sized-one that says Italian models.

I did that with the nipple that came with my cabelas hawkin.Works good.

That is exactly what I do and have always done. Always have messaged the nipple to get a proper cap fit.

Remington or Nobel caps will work fine on the lyman nipples.Ive never tried the cci caps on a lyman but they dont work worth a darn on the cva.Same problem,cap fits too tight.
You sould be able to discharge the gun with the cci caps.Takes a couple of whacks of the hammer on the same cap to get it to seat good then it sould fire.

Bee "VERY CAREFUL" changing the nipple on a loaded cap lock. It is very easy for things to go wrong.
Try and put a little powder in the nipple then a few fresh caps, to get the charge off.
Then change the nipple.

Get a C02 ball discharger and blow that load out ASAP, IMHO. Leaving it sitting around loaded is not a good from a safety aspect, and you may get some rusting, crusting, depending on humidity.

There is a small chance that the bridle screws are loose allowing the fly to come out some which will allow the sear to jam things up.Instead of the hammer falling all the way it hangs up.Looks like it falls far enough but it dosen't.I have one tc percussion lock that does that sometimes,drove me crazy.

I believe that someone dry fired your rifle at some point and swelled the nipple. Replace it and life should be fine.

I adjust , grind my nipples all the time...the caps will slide on and off. not real good for huting ,but great for target shooting.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I GROUND IT DOWN AND WENT TO THE RANGE AND SHOT WITH NO PROBLEM. THIS FORUM IS GREAT STUFF.
