I do not understand the obsession with having the Hawken name on it. You know they had half stock flintlocks in large calibers....why does it have to say Hawken on it? Get a half stock flintlock in 54 caliber or bigger and enjoy it!
Clearly you havn't bought the" Gotta get a Hawken "myth or absorbed Bairds ' The Hawken rifle the Mountain mans choice '. Your one of these heritics, Your only saying that because its true. Hmmm Makes at least two of us but I think there could be more .
Regards Rudyard

I would rather have a Twigg, Manton, Egg etc.

I understand. You should too. Look at the forum name you took nd then look at mine. It shows what we like. Where we live may affect it too. You can see where i'm from. Go to a rendezvous anywhere in my stae and you'll be with mountain men.

Plenty of mountain men owned a Hawken. Even if it was after the fur trade era. They don't stop being mountain men because the beaver trade died. If you live in the mountains (like me) you're a mountain man. I hunt, fish, and hike in the mountains.

Oh boy.

Now we can start a conversation about what was a “mountain man”!

Post 1834 we might have to call them “ex mountain men”. 😉

Mountain scouts?

Mountain guides?

Buffalo hunters?

Reckon they are the kinda folk who say things like, "You hunt Griz pilgrim?" and similar.

Let us not forget there were a fair share of Hawken guns that never reached the Rockies. Some of the best preserved specimens are from around St. Louis(as in from local owners around St. Louis)

As for me, "Lowlands were my home when I was but a child. They will be my deathbed when I've passed my time."- Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

If pokeing about mountains make us a' Mountain Man' then I'me definatly one. I even once when trapping Opposums winter of 68 (In NZ ) improvised two poor pelts into a fur hat more Robinson Crusoe in style & one in the bottom of my sleeping bag ,Nice. So could I even pass as a fur head ? .Naaa don't think so didn't lug a Hawken.

Then he's a better man than me, because all I got was bad knees and an aching back:D;)

You too? I finally had to give in to the Pedersoli and put it up for sale. I really tried but i'm closing in on 80 and a 10 lb gun is not going to work for me. I got one that's 8.5 lbs and a 4" shorter barrel. That will work better.

Are you speaking from experience Limpy?
Of course! Except, we have become about as acquainted with what the Spaniels call a MA Chet-EE down here and stepping unto the woods without one... well if you ain't got one you might as well leave the rifle at home as it won't do you any good. The laurel stands laugh at a man without one.
