Flinters can be frustrating, and can take a while to sort out - but they are fun! It's a great feeling of satisfaction just getting them to go [strike]bang[/strike] sorry BOOM. My Frontier has proven pretty reliable, sparking-wise, and this model does have a rather large lock, but be aware that Pedersoli's use a patent breech and you really need the real black stuff.

How much range time can you get?

And in addition to the black powder question..., how easy is it to find caps in your area?

Folks mentioned black powder availability, BUT with some of the runs on ammunition, caps have been scarce in some places, and when you're out of caps, you're out of ammunition.

I own both, and shoot both, and you do have to do more than simply slap a cap on the lock and shoot. The flash tunnel has to be kept clean and dry and you need to snap one or two caps on the nipple on an empty chamber to ensure there is no residual cleaning fluid or rust preventative, prior to loading. They are more forgiving in the rain.

As for the range time... you will need that to be able to learn what your flinter likes and doesn't like, as far as load, prime, and such. Some rifles like to have the touch hole pricked for each shot, some don't need that, some need a wipe between each shot, some go two or three shots before needing a wipe.
