Howdy been looking around for a single shot BP pistol that I can simply load up like my 54 renegade or 54 hawken, I am sure I will need fff, but ideally ff, that would be great, this is something I could take deer hunting with me as well I think the DNR lets you use the BP pistols 50 cal or better for deer. I am not willing to pay tons of cash simply for something used just because it says T/C on it. Any Suggestions on a good pistol I am leary to order say a lymann plains pistol or traditions or really any pistol with out hearing something good about them and handling one. Suggestions? Is there any other companies out there.

I don't think you would be disappointed in the Lyman Plains pistol. It is a real good shhoter, and handles well. And you can get it in .50 or .54 cal.

:imo: if your pistol is a .54, it really doesn't need FFFg.
It should shoot the FFg just fine.
The load would be reduced quite a bit though. Somewhere around 45 grains I would guess.

Was wondering if the great plains pistol comes with a "suggested load book", adjustable target sights, like a TC, and is the nippe attached to a powder drum or does it have a "snail" like on T/C or green mtn barrels. The reason I was wondering about the Suggested load book, The DNR requires some strange things, A couple of years back they allowed for 50 cal or better black powder pistols but you had to have a certan amount of FPS, and Muzzle Energy etc that was published. I think this was more to prevent people with BP revolvers from shooting deer as well as people with contenders from shooting anything larger than a 454 casul,

Just FYI there is a Lyman Plains .54 cal pistol for sale in the forum classifieds.

Button Buck,

The Lyman BP manual has loading suggestions for .50 and .54 cal pistol with 8 inch barrel and 1/30 twist(sounds like the Plains pistol).

.530 ball 35gr pyrodex RS=750fps at 25 yds with 278 ft/pounds pressure at same distance

same ball with 50gr pyrodex RS = 874fps with 376 ft pounds at 25 yards.

Goex fff got slightly higher numbers with a round ball.

Buffalo Ball-ets with 35 grains of Pyro RS=

35gr = 648fps and 289 ft pounds at 25 yards
50 gr of RS = 863 fps for 512ft pounds at 25 yards.

Hope this helps

Don

You can order them online from lyman products in ready-made or kit form. They also list a full supply of parts and you could fix yourself up with barrels in both calibers.

They are very accurate with bullet or ball.

thanks for all the great info. I gather they do not reccomend shooting bullets but.......anyway, it seems they will shoot either bullet or patched ball well. I would probably get the kit form not so much for the 40 dollars you save but for the fun of it. THanks for all the great info. I will re check the Illinois regs on shipping BP weapons here and re check the DNR on using one for the deer season. I hunted with a 44 mag revolver last season and enjoyed the heck out of it while my son waited to shoot his deer. SHooting a pistol from the tree stand just seemed to click with me. Well thanks again..

the kit form is tempting because there is a lot of written material on the left side of the barrel. You can draw file this off and finish with plumb brown- make it look even more authentic.

Mec-Do you think 250gr Real bullets are a problem in this pistol? IN regards to possible stock cracking. Been using 35 gr of powder. Can not get round ball to group. tks

Mine shoots everything I stuff down the barrel extremely well. I don't get the sensation of excess recoil with the 250 grain REAL or any indication of overstressing the stock. I stuck with 40 grains as a maximum and I believe this is what you see in the Lyman BP loading book
Lee R.E.A.L Bullet 250 Grain 40 fffg 753 46 fps spread
Lee R.E.A.L Bullet 250 grain 40 Pyrodex P 889 89spread

Of course 40gr/vol of pyrodex P is significantly faster than the fffg.

I have inspected the stock closely and don't see any peening but the fact is, I haven't shot many bullet loads- just enough to find out if they would be accurate or not and to get some chronograph readings.

Illinois regs. allow single shot muzzle loading handguns incapable of being loaded from the breech end , .50 cal. or greater, capable of producing 500 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle. No black powder revolvers are allowed.
If you have them shipped from out of state, they have to be sent to a FFL . I find it's alot easier to have the local gun shop order it. I don't know about kits. I would think it would be considered parts, since it's unassembled .

Have you looked at the T/C SCOUT pistol ? I have one in .54 cal. Max load according to the owners manual is 110 grains 2f behind a maxi ball !! WOW Never have tried that one. I shoot 70 grains 3f behind a roundball. If you have never seen one before they look alot like a T/C contender.
