I keep reading about how a large number of shooters put after market rear sights on their colt revolvers.
In the stories the rear sights were installed/dove tailed into the barrel directly above the forcing cone.

Well as I have yet to find a photograph of one of these revolvers, just how was this process done?
And how hard/expensive would it be to do on a 1851 and later colt revolver?

On a side note, how much interference would the hammer create when the gun is fired?

The oldest type I've seen is a No.5 Paterson and the sight is definitely dovetailed, but above the barrel wedge as is a small front sight, which seems to be of brass. Wish the scanner worked so I could put up pictures. The gun is on the cover and page 46 of "Arms For Texas" by Michael J. Koury.
