Maybe Harry Potter could wave his wand and magically turn every trace of fouling into a rust preventing oil.

"Maybe Harry Potter could wave his wand and magically turn every trace of fouling into a rust preventing oil."

Now that would be a waste of a good wand wave....I would suggest to ol' Harry to give a try at turning the lead balls into gold ones, then I could afford to pay someone...maybe Toby Bridges, to clean my guns

Flatlander 1 - I used Murphy Oil's Soap, Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide for awhile (equal parts each). Yes, it cut fouling quickly. However, it seemed to really dry out the metal and start corrosion quickly. It will also ruin a finish on the stock!

Dish detergent and water work well. For me, Ballistol and water work very well, especially with a flush kit. Follow up with straight Ballistol after drying the bore thoroughly.

That's what I do too.

Jim/OH,

I have used the same forumla that you use and it seems that people get up set with the peroxide in the mixture.

My math skills are not what they should be but:

Hydrogen peroxide is a 3% solution, with 97% being water.

70% Isoproply alcohol is 30% water as the inactive ingredient.

Murphy Oil Soap, Pure Vegtable, which they do not list the ingedients, has to be some water there some place.

Just how much percentage is the equally mixed 1/3 proportions of the 3 ingedients actually pure hydrogen peroxide and how long is hydrogen peroxide in contact with the metal in the barrel, a couple of seconds?

Seems like a lot of worry for nothing to me. I would be more worried what is in the tap water that you are getting on you, espcecially with the boil notices on some tap water.

My Ford is better than your Chevy :rotf: That said to each there own. Richard has a point if you flush quickly enough but you all dont want to see what 100% peroxide will do. I seen it totally destroy a pair of leather boots and screw up a mans hands in 2 weeks. I seen what it did to metal when I was wrenching at the landfill nasty stuff. There is a reason fhey ship it in plastic drums,it wont see my guns.

Hey..how nasty can it be...recently my dog ate a box of valentine chocolates, and my vet told me to make the dog drink a cup of hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. It worked (although it wasn't real fun trying to pour that stuff down the dogs throat LOL}

I used MAP for a while after reading about it in Muzzle Blasts back in the early '90's. Nothing works better than FLUSHING a barrel with water and a few drops or detergent.

i was shown years and years ago to use plain old windshield washer solvent, a buck a gallon. Water alochol and detergent all in one. Never any rust and a quick clean up, plus i usually need it for getting home from a shoot for the bugs on the windshield.
