Persistance does pay off!

The magazines always say that you shouldn't give up hunting as long as the season is still open. Well, Monday was the last day that I will be able to deer hunt in NY state this year because I have to spend this weekend(the last weekend) making a trip to VA. I went to a spot that has produced deer in the past. I sat in a stand until late in the afternoon, only seeing a couple squirrels. As I checked my watch & there was only about 10-15 minutes left before legal shooting hours were over, I figured that I wasn't going to get a buck this year. Just a few minutes later I spotted a movement in the distance through the woods. I still had empty tags for both buck & doe. At first, I thought that it was a doe. The deer walked right up to about 30-40 yards away, but was shielded by trees & underbrush all the way in. It stood there, for what seemed like forever, eating. That's when I was able to see a set of horns.(but still no shot presented) I watched the buck eat as the light started to fade along with legal shooting time. Finally the buck moved in front of the smallest opening that a possible shot could make it through. My gun roared & the buck ran out of sight. I climbed out of my stand & quickly went to where the buck had been standing when I shot. Tracks....blood! I followed the trail for only about 50 yards & there the buck lay. Light was fading very quickly by then. Litterally, a last minute buck!

Aout 7 years ago, the first year Illinois offered a hunter two tags instead of one, I filled my first tag, an antlerless only tag, just five minutes after legal shooting time started on the first morning of the season. A small doe walked right up to my stand, not 10 yds away and since I still had an either sex tag I took her and continued to hunt and hunted all three days day of the first season without seeing another deer. I hunted all 4 days of the second season and never saw another deer until a large doe walked right up to my stand, almost exactly as the first one did, and with just about 3 minutes left of the season, I filled my other tag.

Yep, I agree to never give up as long as te season is still open.

I call it "putting your time in" Some years you just have to put in more than others. A few years back I had my tags until the last 15 minutes or so of the season, same as you. Then a suitable little fork horn took pity on me. Ran right up to me and stopped like he knew time was short.

Knock wood, I've only had two years that no shot at all was presented, and not for lack of me looking.

It's amazing how few deer are killed while sitting in your living room watching TV. Gotta be "out there" if you're gonna fill a tag. Congrats!!
