I used a toilet paper roll for the form and melted the pewter in a small cast iron pot On my first poured cap. 6ADB6F65-4DC2-45D1-BD93-E2BA6D74A679.jpeg09A573B6-56AC-4B76-859B-8549EE0CB9A4.jpegCD218D2E-5A65-4E9B-BA58-BD45F079D43D.jpeg

In addition to tablet backing file folders work real well. I used brown paper from a large grocery bag once to make a poured nose cap on a T/C. Just wrapped the paper around the nose and into the barrel channel, put the barrel in place -- a tight fit -- and wrapped cotton twine around it all to seal the metal in. Put a dowel in the ramrod hole and poured the metal without incident or issues.

If you are to use some sort of cooking utensil to melt metals in you ought to mark it in some way as dangerous and only use it for metals. Ingesting lead and other metals isn't good for anyone's health. A contaminated cast iron item might wind up in someone else's kitchen years down the road.

Interesting on the use of flux. I had a friend pour my nose cap and he did an excellent job building a wall out of heavy cardboard dams. A little on the same line, however, I struggled with pewter inlays for a tomahawk and my first attempts were unsuccessful. I eventually got it to stick and part of that was as suggested, heating the wood. However, I made a cardboard dam around it and it burned the wood. Dang it. Want to do another but I do not want to burn the wood!

Melt the metal in a 1 pound capacity plumber's ladle , install the card stock around the forearm ,dust the area w/powdered graphite to stop wrinkles in the metal. try this.....oldwood
