Pheasant season tradition.

Would love to hunt pheasant. Mighty expensive over here. Something like $70/bird IF you can find somewhere in Australia to do it

Pete, £70 @ bird sounds about right for a small driven bird shoot in UK. £600/1/2 gun on an 8 gun team.. 600 birds to covert with a few wild birds from last year thrown in. Bags of 30 >> 50 a day??
Local wild bird self kept walk about--a bit different "if your lucky". A few bird to the landlord aaand a few days helping out at harvest and with conservation and maintainance.Some crop protection( Pigeon shooting,rabbits,the odd fox and Tree rats. Ducks if there is a pond or two.) What more could the Loner want??apart from a GOOD DOG, A JESS!!) And a BLACK POWDER GUN. An 1860's Unmentionable Double R.ADAMS. SxS Under lever No.5. CylxCyl. OLD DOG..

$70 per bird is way out of my price range. £70 per bird is borderline highway robbery imo. I think I'll have to stick with hunting feral game,although that can be damned expensive too these days. No wonder people poach

Yep, love the look. You bring class to the sport. I used to hunt pheasants in the corn fields of Illinois when I was a kid. Never had dogs and this was long before I had ever even heard of muzzle loaders. Pheasant hunting is fun and tasty.

Nice shooting. Looks like a great day. No pheasant near me, but I've been scaring a few grouse and woodcock when not occupied with geese. Keep after them!

Hunting birds without my dog doesn't interest me much.I'd rather hunt without a shotgun.Many is the time that I've run my dog and let the boys shoot. It lets me concentrate on the dog and give the boys a heads up when dog is on to something. I always had retrievers , never had a pointer. I just never could bring myself to ask a pointer to go into the a$$ freezing cold water when we switch to Duck & goose hunting.NOT that a pointer won't do it, I just can't ask.......... Nice harvest. Beautiful birds, dog and shotgun. Was the cheek piece and padding factory or added on? Is that Beretta over and under a 12 gauge? I have William Moore double 11 gauge and use close to 90 grains 2F. Seems like your 65 grain load worked just fine.

Its a standard feature of the Berretta Tricentennial the cheekpiece. I don't know what you mean by padding sorry.

The gun is cool, but that dog is AWESOME!!! What is the breed? It looks like part wolf, part opossum, and part echidna!
I think it's awesome that you scratched some down with the ML Shotgun. I had a Pedersoli s x s for a time but I could hit very little with it so down the road it went. As a lefty, I have my first shotgun with cast-on which has made a big difference for me. I suppose I could shoot BP shells out of it sometime.

Hi, Brit. I think Speed was talking a bit like a Goat when he likened Jess to an Echidua. Jess is pretty bright. I wonder if he's ever tried to teach an Echidua to hunt and pick up. The Greek addition or the Ozzy one.. LOL. OLD DOG..

A good friend left yesterday for South Dakota on a five day phesant hunt, ask me to go along but I declined, staying close to home getting ready for rifle deer season.

Jess is a whippet cross dam and a Bedlington terrier sire.
Fine dense hair that does not moult much.
We think she is ten or more now.
She isn't much of a gun dog and rarely catches anything for her self but she is keen to be out with me and every now and then pulls something out of the hat!

My little tradition of using a muzzleloader for my first birds of the season has been another successful year.
It was hard work mind you finding a few!
In fact I was struggling but decided to release Jess into a thick overgrown slang of trees and scrub and bingo, out fly's a cock bird and turns away. About a 30 yard shot.View attachment 165676
I still had the one barrel loaded in the topsy turvy barreled Beretta thingy gun and putting Jess in some more cover two birds lifted a little to far forward for my liking but the 40 yard left to right crosser was soooo tempting I took the shot.

I just loaded something around 65gns of powder and 1&1/8oz of #5 shot. Just thin cards for a wad.
My wife does a good schnitzel and I've asked to do these birds in a day or two or four even.
