Ya know, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I'm wondering if some of you folks would mind posting pics of your main skinning/butcher knife sheaths.
I've got an old Sheffield butcher knife I'm contemplatin' reworking into an antler handled, oversized skinner/ scalper/fightin' blade.
I haven't been able to increase my resource library lately as Christmas is a spendy time of year as ya know. But I don't wanna wait til I get the "right " book to start my knife and sheath. I ain't looking for a free ride just some ideas .
I'm without a definite persona per se but I'm totin' a caplock so I'm thinking late 1830's NOT in the wild frontier but headin west.
Thanks folks.

This type of thing?
Easy to make.

Man nice work!!! Do you line your sheaths with rawhide or are they just heavy leather? Beautiful work!

Thanks Billy.
The leather is tanned deer hide and I wasn't kidding about it being around 40 years old. I got it from my dad's estate and I remember the hide when I was a kid. Don't know the history of the hide, not sure if it was from deer that my father shot, traded or got from a friend.
The sheath is simple. I really don't know what I'm doing so I made something I thought looked right. Put it together one evening...

I like to do beadwork, so here's a sample. My knife is an old Green River butcher knife. It's not period appropriate for early 1800's, but I like it. The image is done on my scanner so parts are a little hazy.

Here are a few of mine. Most of mine have a wang of some sort that I tie onto the belt, just incase.

This one is held together with the tacks. They are on both sides (I put the tacks thru, clipped off and then bent the shanks over. Then I cut the shank on another tack shorter and then tapped into the same hole going thru the opposite way) I saw an original in a museum that was this same shape, I think the original was Souix, IIRC. Oh, and I plan on taking that handle off and attaching a new one in a more PC way.
