In my new member introductory message of a few days ago, Maxiball requested a few pictures and info on my .40 and .58. This is all his falult. When it comes to showing pictures of my guns, I'm kind of like a Grandmother with pictures of her first grandchild. Since Ansel Adams is still dead, I had to take the pictures myself, thus the lesser quality than he would have taken. Both guns were made by Ron Luckenbill of Emporium PA, just two of the four I have made by him. The .40 is a copy of an Isaac Haines done with a 38" Rice radius grooved barrel, curly maple stock from Cameron Co, PA, where Ron lives, and iron mounted furniture left in the white but boiled in Clorox to age it. It seems to like a .390" ball and .015" patches over 40 gr. 3F for close work and 60 gr. 3F for further out. The .58 is a Frech Fusil pattern with a 38" Colerain radius grooved barrel, walnut stock, and browned iron furniture. Both guns have left hand large Siler locks. My in close load for it is 65 gr. 3F and the deer and far out load is 100 grains of 3F. Some may blanch at the use of 3F in a .58 but I have had no problem. I know a guy that shoots healthy charges of it in a .62. I use both .557" and .565" balls in it, depending on what thickness patch material is availble at Wally World and Jo-ann Fabrics. Now, if I can just get the pictures posted.

bp can be fun

I've had the .58 for a couple of years now and I just got the .40 the first week of February. I shoot one or the other of them 4 or 5 times a week, sometimes more.

: Personally, I found that a charge of 82gr. (3 drams aprox) 3F GOEX shot very well in the .69 for just over 1,200fps, but raising 3F's volume charge over that, caused patch problems with the .015 patch and .684" ball. Going to a .020" patch solved the problem but loading was difficult. The .015 patch held with 2F right up to 165gr. 2F, for a good velocity increase (1,530fps) over that received by 3F. The larger charge of 2F, while less "Efficient", gave good velocity and very easy loading, while recoil was OK, but heavy, in the 9 1/2lb. rifle. It seemed with the 2F, although higher gross pressures are created than with 82gr. 3F, the pressure rise didn't "over-run" the obturation of the ball, as 3F seemed to do. ie: 2F expanding the ball for a tight fit, prior to gas escapage past the ball as with 3F- my theory). Paper ctgs. shot with the same velocity and accuracy as patched balls in that particular rifle, and would print them into the same group, same wonderful accuracy, which backs my theory, I feel.
: Very nice looking guns, Superflint! The "Cow's Foot" stock on the fusil was a nice shooting, comfortable stock on the "Tulle" fusil I shot, and is reminisent of the 1728 "St. Etienne'" Musket, which followed that particular pattern.

Waddaya mean Ansel Adams is dead? When did he die? You holdin' out on us.....you sure he didn't take those pictures? I talked to him a few months back and everything was fine.....or was it a few years back....decades maybe? Oh well, I forget.

Very nice firearms, beautiful in fact. I've thoroughly enjoyed looking at them. Many thanks.

Yep. You can come shoot in my backyard anytime.

Alas, poor Ansel. I used to work for Ilford and we had several of his prints in the hallways. They were screwed down pretty good so I never did get one to 'follow me home."
