It has been a rough season... I have been hunting ...and had not seen a single deer all muzzleloader season... rifle opened up Saturday.... Still carry my traditions deer Hunter throughout the rifle season I finally seen a deer yesterday afternoon ....and decide to set up in the same spot again this morning.... And I wasn't there 10 minutes before this beautiful piebald buck came walking through... And within 30 minutes I have taken a shot on him.... And he went DRT... I know he's just a little Spike but he's one of the most beautiful deer... and best trophies I've ever taken.. deer was taken using a traditions deer Hunter... 50 cal.. a .495 round ball & a .10 patch...90 grains of T7... Sparked by CCI musket cap

Congrats on that great deer. looks almost exactly like my first deer. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of it and post it. Funny thing about mine... I was hunting on a cattle farm when he came trotting by in thick cover. I took the shot and he fell right behind a little hill where I couldn't see him. When I replayed it in my head I saw all the brown and white spots and thought buck fever tricked me into shooting a calf. The twenty yards or so I had to go before I could put eyes on this deer was the longest walk of my life. Enjoy the meat. It will be delicious. Good job brother.

Congratulations on your deer! And good on you for sticking with the old front-stuffer right on through rifle season.

Yeah we wanted to... We are going to have to do it ourselves though... The place mere me doesn't do hides anymore... They are even cutting back the head mounts that they do each year by 100 ... But we are going to give it a shot
There was a pretty lengthy discussion of tanning recently, right here on the forum: Tanning First Timer Tips?

Good luck with it! Please let us know how it turns out.

Thanks... This one was taken on public land...so I knew it wasn't a little cow...but I did do double look at it thinking what is that goat doing out here ... Before my brain put it all together

Thank you sir I will be reading that thread before we try it

That would make a very nice rug, think like a bear rug type, I have seen them done and they look very nice. Beautiful deer.

Flesh it, salt it twice, let dry and send it to a tannery. I wouldn’t experiment on a hide like that! Just my .02. Any advise you want, pm me. I’m a taxidermist.

And congratulations. That’s quite a trophy!

The taxidermist here said they don't do them any more last one took 4 years to get back..so they stopped...so don't have a lot of options

Not too hard to do an alum and salt cured hide. Dress the flesh side, get off all the fat and subcutaneous membranes, etc, and put the whole thing into the solution. Wait five-eight days, let it dry a bit and start stretching and working it. The flesh side will turn white and beautiful before your eyes! As you pull and stretch it. Work it over a board, flesh side down, and it can be like a robe!

Congratulations and glad to hear you are going to tan the hide. That was my first thought as soon as I saw your picture.

As a kid with my first deer at 15 (bow & arrow) my Dad and I tanned the hide at home. Can't remember how we did it but it turned out stiff as a board. But it hung in his garage for nearly 50 years! Last year my daughter surprised me for Christmas (her family bought my Dad's place when he passed) by presenting me with a painting she did in "Native American" style on a piece of that hide. The hair is still on the back. She softened it then did the painting and mounted it on a "stick" with some feathers.

It's something I'll cherish forever.
