I can't help but think that there is some sort of indicator which would tell us something so that we could make some sort of inference. I read somewhere that in the AWI, the powder used by the English was so bad when compared to the French stuff the colonists were using that there was actually a stand off, where the colonial soldiers could range the English, but they were unable to bring effective fire (this might a load of hogwash... I would want to see 'primary source' on this before I committed to it)
at any rate, I would think that there would be an ordinance manual or something that would say that this charge should propel this weight bullet through this gun at thus- and- such a range, and from there you could get a pretty good feel for the brisance of the stuff back then as compared to that of current manufacture.
