I ran across those at Pietta's site a couple weeks ago and have looked and looked at every site I could think of, but no luck so far. I'd kill for one of those birdshead snubbies. :( I don't know if Pietta would sell to an individual or not (you could email 'em and see). You might be able to get one of the websites that carries Pietta to special order too. I'm not in a buying position at the moment, but I'd look into those two possibilites if I were.

edit: a few Pietta sellers to check with:

Wow! I didn't even know they made those! I made my own from a '51 Navy kit, am still working on it.

If anyone finds out where to get a birdshead grip please post. I have a .36 and .44 Pietta in the 5.5 inch sheriff and would love to put the birdshead grips on them. They could then be carried concealed without the big plow shaped grip bulging out. Plus they just look cool.

Emailed Pietta and was informed that they can not sell/ship to individuals directly, but that Traditions carries the short barreled, birds head gripped 1860 Army. I went to Traditions web site and did not see it listed. Sentthem an email...will let you know

Don, I have a pietta 44 sheriff and a .357
Cimarron Thunderer ( which HAS A BIRS HEAD GRIP)
I just compared them and it sure looks like the birds head grip is the same size as the sheriff...course you would have to reshape the grip frame.
You can get thunderer grips at the Cimarron
site. $59 a pair. Beware that if you over work your brass grip frame it will break.

Tinker....I know you know yer stuff...but I think grips from a lightning will be too small for a colt .44
I think he would need grips from a Thunderer..
I think the lightening grips would be too small?
Whatcha think feller?
I just compared my 2 again and it sure looks to me like all it will take is a backstrap, grips and a triggerguard from Cimmarons Thunderer...
cant be sure unless I would break both down and try to interchange the parts....
sure would be cheaper than buying a whole new pistol.

You have a Cimmaron lightening or Thunderer and a colt .44?

I am sure that the lightening would be close, I don’t have a Thunderer to look at. I took measurements of my mod “P” jr. and it is .008 larger then my 1851 at the top of the back strap where it bolts onto the frame. If it fits I am not sure that you would need to replace the trigger guard too.

“cant be sure unless I would break both down and try to interchange the parts....”

I would break mine down if you break yours down.
Then we would all know.

I sawed the barrel off (36 caliber), also cut the top strap off just behind where it narrows down into the grip section and also just behind where it screws to the trigger guard. I then sawed/filed in "steps" to where the
1/8" thick brass strap I had made would fit in flush, then soldered in place after bending to shape. The reason for doing this is that I didn't have sufficient heat available to anneal the thick brass top strap. There are some pictures of the steps I went through in the Gun Builders section under '51 Navy Bird head grip. It wasn't hard to do and the cost was zero as I had some brass plate on hand. You will have to make your own grips unless you get some first and use them as a pattern to bend the top strap frame. I have fairly large hands so wanted my grips to be a little larger than the way the originals were done.

That Pietta web site I believe has several that we can't get on this side of the Alantic. That plated frame Spiller and Burr caught my eye. Original first models had a silver plated brass frame and perhaps early second models. The sight says they have three models of the revolver but does not describe any of them but the plated frame is obvious in two of the pictures. All you can find here are the unplated brass framed ones.
