My normal patch material is heavy canvas (.024" to .022" compressed) and loads tight; but it is still easily seated using the wood, underbarrel rod. Three guns, however, do much better with ticking and one with .012" flannel. It's definitely worth trying a number of fabrics until you/rifle get one you like.

Walmart sells a red stripe pillow ticking washed and dryers compresses to .018 with a good lube 3/1 beef tallow to bees wax and a .315 ball shoots just fine . Been shooting my .32 for 40+ years. Pretty much same load the whole time. 28 grs. Goes 3 fffg. Try that load in your .32 Check your patches for cutting don't think you will see much burn through. If new barrel you may have To shoot it some to take the sharp edges off to get really good groups .I lapped my barrel to save some time.See who has been winning the mail in postal match. Try this before you try a 15grs. or so load . I've shot100 yard ground hogs with this load no wounded ones.Really drops them fast.

Oh yeah make sure the weave between the stripes is on an angle .The strait weave is typically cheap Chinese weave and has a tendency to shred and blow apart.Liquid lubes don't seem to work as well as above lube in this load.

I get mine from Jo Ann’s fabrics my friend.

Of course I take my calipers for measurements.

I look for a tight weave. ( feather quill proof ). i/e mattress/ pillow ticking. It measures at .018 is what I buy. I buy 4 yards at a time which lasts a very long time, and I do a lot of shooting on a regular basis.

They also provide thinner ticking as well my friend.

You can visually inspect the tightness of the weave. The tighter the better! Recovered shot patches and if wanting to, I could’ve reused the shot patch due to that tight weave.

Lastly, just want to wash the ticking prior to cutting into strips my friend. Gets rid of starch or whatever chemicals they use in their packing/ storing process? Been known to put those strips in my mouth at times! 😂

Respectfully, Cowboy

I have been using a red-striped mattress ticking from Joann Fabrics for several years. It mics at about .012 or .013 and is perfect for .490 balls in my .50 TC Hawken. I've attached a link, but I can't be positive what's shown on site is exactly what I bought in the store.

Take your measuring tools with you. I found the ladies very kind and willing to send several samples of different fabrics home with me to test before I settled on what's worked so well form me ever since.

Hobby Lobby is another good source.

I use recycled flannel shirts and lounge pants for patches in both my 50cal percussion Hawken and 54cal Lancaster flintlock. The flannel mics out at .010. I also use a wad of corn meal between powder and ball, a 45acp cartridge full.
