Okay, forgive me for my ignorance. But I would like to buy my patch material in bulk, and make my own patches, or at least try it, as I've heard its cheaper, and more authentic. I only have/need .018 patch thickness for all my rifles. My question is, is the all the cotton blue/white ticking roughly .018" thick? Or are there different thicknesses of the stuff? If I wander on down to the fabric store in search of pillow ticking what am I looking for?
There are some differences in thicknesses, no matter that the color or pattern.
Take some calipers in the store with you. Buy an assortment of thicknesses, regardless of the printed pattern. The main thing is to be sure it is 100 cotton.
As others have have said, wash whatever you buy a couple of times when you get home.

This doesn’t help much but when I find 100% cotton pillow ticking I buy at least two yards, even though I might not need it right then.

Jo Ann’s did have it. If you have Amish in your area check some of the smaller sewing shops.

I buy mine at Walmart. The red ticking. I take a mic in with me. Hobby Lobby has it too but not the thickness I like. Same with Joann’s.
I’m not sure where the Walmart red ticking comes from me. I didn’t look at the bolt. I gave some to a member on here. He didn’t like it. But it works well in my .36’s. It shot well in my 32 also but I went thinner for hunting using bear grease as the first reload was a bugger to get down the barrel. Just my .02.

I wear socks until they're falling off my feet, made a good decision to buy up many new wooden Army socks shortly before retirement in 2007, they outlast anything else I've worn.
Those wooden Army socks are miserable to wear, but they do last forever.

Best idea is to carry a caliper to the store and measure it yourself. I've found most blue stripe pillow ticking to be around .015". There is also brown and blue stripe "mattress ticking" which is heavier and measures about .018". I stocked up a few years ago but then started using heavy canvas of about .023" to .024". With more than just one rifle to feed some of them demand canvas patches but 2-3 others normally get pillow OR mattress ticking depending on the gun.
