While at the fabric store with my wife it suddenly dawned on me that I was in THE place to get some pillow ticking. I want to try cutting patches at the muzzle. Anyhow after the clerk said they did not have any -- but they had this "marvelous" denim material. I was unmoved by her excitement and detemind to hold out for ticking. However, I had to ask myself a couple questins that I hope to get answers for here:
1. Does piollow ticking come in different weights (thicknesses) and if so what is equal to a .020 patch?
2. Can I use denim as a patching material?

1. I've never seen ticking in different weights. The stuff I get at Wal-Mart mics out at .018 after two washings to remove the sizing.

2. Denim can be used for patches. A lot of folks use it.

Any pure cotton material can be used as long as it has a tight weave that will hold up to the blast.

To test thickness you will need a micrometer. Look for a fabric that has a uniform thickness over the whole batch.

Good luck!

Pillow ticking does indeed come in different thickness's. If you buy some at a store, there is no guarantee the next lot they get in will be the same as the last. If you find some you like, buy plenty for the future. It won't spoil. I have seen ticking vary from .012" to .024". If you have a thickness in mind, the only way to be sure you get the right stuff is to take a micrometer or caliper along and measure it. I have also used denim in the correct thickness for patches.

Pillow ticking come in two sizes (thickness), regular and heavy...

It also come in non-manly patterns, as seen below...

So, be sure to get the butch pattern, this way you wont get laughed off the firing line...

Ticking usually comes in two thickness, regular weight which mikes at about 15-16 thou's and heavy weight, which mikes about 18-20 thou's. Wally-world only carries the heavy wieght. Fabric stores carry both. Heavy weight you can see the print on both sides were the light has print on one side only. I recommend buying then in different colors so you won't forget witch is witch ::A word to the wise, make yourself presentable cause the clerks will be watching you and dying of courisity and usually ask what are you doing with that thingy(micrometer) in you hand  Don't give us front stuffers a bad reputation cause we look or dress funny :haha:

My experience is the same as Superflint. As a matter of fact, it is sometimes hard to find that "same" thickness that worked so well two months ago.

Like Sniper68 said, that micrometer will get you some very strage comments, wild looks, and a good lecture on how "thread count means everything", Dontcha know nothing!

I know where you got that MM! Looks like a Log Cabin special to me. I was goona buy some of that stuff but thought better not! My wife just might want to sew some pillows out of it and I can just imagine myself at the range, trying to cut up that damn pillow! Them guys would be laughing their heads off!

Actually, buying that flower pattern ticking might be an advantage. Kind of hard to shoot well when you are laughing your butt off.
While they're laughing, you be shootin.

Might get accused of swiping somebody's underwear! Imagine coming home and telling the wife "Look honey, look at this pretty patching material".

Hey, I bought some of that flowery stuff the last time I was at Log Cabin Shop...it works great! I figure that few people are going to laugh at anyone holding a loaded .50 caliber rifle.....even if he uses flowery material to load it. Besides....most people are already laughing at "old-timey gun" shooters behind our backs anyway!

Think of it as a camouflage pattern, flowers are found in nature more so than blue and white stripes... :hmm:

I have a question if we use cotton for a shirt we are told it's not PC,that although they had cotton it was expensive and wasn't the norm.So why do we use cotton patching?Wouldn't it have been better to use the cotton for a shirt then to chop it up into little pices and fire it out of a gun! What would they be using back around 1750-1800?Can you use linen?Just wondering?...Pete

Linen would be a good choice. It was much cheaper than cotton (instead of 7X more $ as it is now).

Cotton was certainly available, but you don't want to make a shirt out of something so useful for patching. :haha:

Osnaburg, fustian, canvas, duck, sackcloth, linsey-woolsey, sailcloth, muslin, etc. Probably all were used as patching.

Well I'll be....never quite thought about it like that...camo patches! Hot damn...thanks for the idea...I can see another marketing idea to make a few bucks.

That's actually better than the last idea I had: Dehydrated water! Yup, hard to believe, but I'm working on a formula right now. The advantages are so numerous: fat free, take it any where, zero carbs, microwavable. Yup, just add a little water, and "poof" instant water! Do I hear any takers?

Ummm, you are about 10 years too late...
