Where is the cheapest place to get pillow ticking? If not pillow ticking ,what do you use for patch material?

Walmart.
The cost of cotton fabric has gone up like everything else.
7.99 and up around here,,
It's a good idea to keep an eye on the coupon section of the news paper or check on line for Joanns fabrics or Hancocks, Crafts Direct,, or what ever local shop you have,,
Some times you can find a 10-20% off a purchase coupon.

I was able to use one of my wife's 40% off coupons at a Joann's Fabrics. They had several different weights of pillow ticking so you might want to take something with you to measure the thickness. It will get thinner after you wash the sizing out the first time.

I use pillow ticking from Wal-Mart. I take a micrometer with me to measure. One or two yards at a time is not a big investment. I don't shoot as much as I did in the past. I used to use denim and bought it by the bolt.

I have never tried denim. Does it work pretty well? I have an old denim shirt I just cut up for rags. I may measure it and give it a try.

Denim has a tight weave like ticking but I find it in different thicknesses than ticking so it is worth a look.

I found denim cloth to have a variation of .002 or more over the surface of a yard sample. I think a used shirt will have even more variation.

You don't buy by price.
There are various grades and thicknesses. The heavily sized narrow stuff from Jo Annes fabrics works for me. Next choice is "drill" of the right thickness or denim. The thinner blue stripe ticking is probably not going to work.
The best way to buy this stuff is to find it on sale. But this is periodic and hitting a sale, for me is just luck.

This is pretty common for ticking too.

Wash your patching in hot water, little detergent is needed, I used "extra rinse" and dry on high.
Shrinkage will tighten the weave further.

Like everything in this game the ball/patch/bore combo must be just right for optimum accuracy. At the time I shot only .45 cal. and mostly from Douglas barrels. On the range using a short-short starter and mallet it worked just fine.
But, with time and experience I evolved to pillow ticking. The denim is a bit thick. Old denim clothes are not desirable because they wear thin at different places. I bought new denim and washed before lubing. I also wash my ticking before lubing.
