Here is my 54 (investarm) Great Plains percussion. This was a factory finished gun not a kit. I hate bluing, I despise all that writing on the barrel and I really don’t like modern wood finish. So some browning solution, sandpaper, alcohol shoe dye, linseed oil and a little patience can make it look a lot better. I have a few spots to touch up yet. Davis triggers, marbles rear sight and a Lyman front sight.

Strong work, @TreeMan ! You probably get a pretty good sight picture with that set-up. Does it work well in low light?

Notchy Bob
Honestly I have a hard time with any iron sight set up. I use this gun for shooting matches not for hunting. I have one of those circle inserts in the front sight. I have an easier time putting that black target dot in the circle than using any type of post sight. Works kinda like a reverse peep. I have a dozen different custom and production guns and I swear none of them shoot better than this rifle. Some shoot as well but none any better. It’s hard to beat an investarms barrel. I have guns with colerain, and green mountain barrels and several Pedersoli rifles also. I’ve been shooting flint in matches for several years and this year I’m going back to the percussion class. In other words I’m tired of losing lol. I do well with flint rifles from the bench but my offhand shooting with a flintlock is terrible. I just cannot overcome that flinch offhand.

That rifle looks Great!! I’ve been working on my GPR also removing those ugly warning stamp and browning the metal
Thanks! I just used some 200 grit sandpaper and lightened them up a little then a heavy browning job. If you look really hard you can faintly see them. I didn’t want to get heavy into draw filing.

I found that works for me as well. I have a Pedersoli Kentucky that I sanded with 220. After that I did a several coat browning job. I know where the 'Pedersoli' is stamped on the barrel but you must look very closely to find it. It seems to me that the browning fills the letters with rust that almost forms metal again. In any event I love your GPR. Dale

Nice job TreeMan, what browning solution did you use?
I ran out of Laurel mountain forge browning solution and I found an OLD full bottle of MSM (mountain state muzzleloading) solution in my supplies. That stuff works great. Someone actually still sells it on eBay. MSM has been out of business for many years. You have to be careful with LMF about overlapping applications or it will change colors. You have to put it on in good even strokes and not switch directions. This MSM solution doesn’t do that. Slap it on and let it hang. Took me two days of letting this rifle hang under my porch during heavy rain. The humidity done it’s job even though it’s really cold.

Great Job!

When I redid my Investarms Hawken I went with the Hawken Shop's iron replacement parts, sanded and refinished the stock and kept all the metal in the white.
