I started out with one 1858 Remington and then another one wound up coming home with me. Then I needed a way to carry them around and handle all the stuff that goes into the care and feeding of a cap gun.

I built this case out of a wooden box I got at a garage sale for $4. It didn't look this good when I bought it. The box was probably used to keep table silver in. It was built of solid mahogany so it was worth messing with.

I cut the box down a bit because I didn't need all the depth that the silver did. I lined it with red flannel and used curly maple for the dividers.

I'm not real happy with the latches, they are too modern so I will replace them if I find something I like.

I also wanted holsters to carry them in. I found that I needed to carry the pistols cross draw because the barrels are long enough and my torso is short enough that a standard draw is uncomfortable. I found a picture of an old working cowboy holster that kept the gun covered but accessible so I made two holsters with that kind of design. I'm not sure that I would ever have a need to carry two pistols at once, but as long as I was on a roll I figured I might as well make a pair.

That is a great four dollar investment! I like the curly maple dividers too. Maybe you should have kept the depth for the silver in the box. Then you could have disguised the case like a strong box complete with a secret compartment.

Complete with Remington center fire caps, I see.

Nice deal. I look for old brief cases and line them with foam. Not as classy, but they work.

"Complete with Remington center fire caps, I see."

If you mean the caps in the white tin with the red spot on them I have some Remington percussion caps in a tin just like that, #10s and I don't know how old they are.

Remington used that design for it's cap tins up until about 1970. Until then, the Remington percussion cap tins all said "center fire" on them.

until about 40 years ago, most American made percussion caps were labeled as center fire, whether from UMC, Hicks, Elm City, Remington Goldmarks or Winchester.

Early Colt's Patent revolvers were said to be center fire and apparently what was originally considered center fire is a little different than what is considered center fire today.

I wish I could find a few more of those red dot Remington tins. I bought that one new back in the day and just never got around to using the caps up until I got a couple of cap & ball pistols.

The holsters are a nice design, and well made, but I think that they are let down by the stitching - get yourself a stitch-marking wheel for future projects just to neaten things up, and maybe dye the current stitching to match the leather.

Otherwise very good stuff.

I used an antique stitch marking wheel. The leather is very thick belly leather and it was difficult to keep the holes punched in a straight line. I have been debating whether to dye the holsters black or leave them as is. Covering the stitching with the black dye would make them a lot less noticeable.

Nice job! IMO your holsters look good have a nice home spun look to then, if your going for a pc/hc look I would leave them how they are. Alot of things that were needed were made while sitting around the fire. That box is great as well. :hmm: Gives me an idea.. :applause:
