Pistol for hunting

The BEST advice, imVho, is "ask a game warden" for THAT individual city/county/parish/state & "avoid pain & agony".
(One of the VA cities that I hunted in 3 years ago has a NO HANDGUN HUNTING rule, though handguns are lawful for hunting elsewhere & CCW licensees MAY carry their handgun for SELF-defense in that jurisdiction.)

Here in TX a revolver of ANY sort (except a RF) is lawful IF you have a CHL.
(Some local areas have DIFFERENT rules than the "general regulation".)
