What tipe of pistol is best for target comp. One like LYMAN 50c type, or the 44c six shooters?? Will only load and shoot one at a time.

:hmm: If you have the desire to shoot competitively, eventually you will have to consider a custom made gun. If I would recommend a "beginner" model with a double set trigger that will not cost you your first born, I would consider the Traditions William Parker percussion in .50 calibre.. This has a double set trigger and fixed sights, but there's is plenty of gun there to learn. However, in the case that there is more expendable cash available then look at the Pedersoli LePage or Mortimer. They can be obtained in other calibres either flint or percussion. They could cost at least 4X the Parker. :v :hatsoff:

I'd also recommend a Traditions pistol, but my choice would be the Trapper. It has double set triggers and the rear sight is screw adjustable for elevation. The sights are drift adjustable for windage. They're quite accurate for a gun that costs so little.

Is there $70 to $80 difference between the two?

The Trapper is about $70 cheaper at list price. I have seen them in the $170 range now and then, and an auction on Gunbroker had one for $150 NIB buyout price a couple weeks ago if memory serves. Wishing I had picked it up, actually.

It's a good looking piece too, if that's important. The sights aren't bad for what they are. The thin front sight works good for targets but gets bent easy if you knock it around.

ss1,
I got to second Plink's reply. I shoot one, my buddy shoots on and there are a couple that show up at our club on ocasion, both rock lock and percusion. Mine out of the box was a shooter up until someone bumped the front blade.noworries, it sighted right back in. greattrigger, really likes hardly any powder at all(mine groups 50 yards with 25 to 30 gr 3f) Of all the trappers I have been around, I haveseen only one equipment failure.... a broken spring ona rocklock model. He was out of the game for about 12 minutes.

I like the william parker as well!

Ruger's cap&ball will shoot slugs well. I've got a Pietta '58 Remington replica 'Buffalo' with a 12" barrel that shoots just as good and cost less(about $235), but not as powerful. Still though, with a slug and maximum charge (steel frame for constant shooting with this load, the brass frame may not handle it) the energy level is near .45 acp level. A max. charge may not be the most accurate load though. Also available in SS for about $350.
A buddy has a Cimmaron replica 'Dragoon' 6-shooter that shoots good and is powerful also. About 350$, as much as the Ruger.
I've got a CVA .50 capper 'Hawken' that I got as a companion piece for my .50 'Frontier' carbine. Uncertain if it is still available and I've shot it just a few times, mainly to see if it would shoot at all so can't say what accuracy potential it has. Seemed that it did OK. Good luck and good shooting :v

Every answer you need will depend on where you are shooting and who you are shooting with.

Competitieve shooting is controlled by various rules, even if they are made up by the local club and apply to no one and no where else.

I know that in my area a C&B sixgun would only be allowed at certain matches, even loaded one shot at a time. Front loader flintlocks and percussion are even seperated. Even single and double trigger and adjustable sights get you thrown into another catagory.

Check before you buy.

Ghost made a real valid point with what clubs allow and the various configurations!
Good catch Ghost

Yes, one could put different/better sights onthe trapper. front and rear are dovtail mounts.
I personally feel there could bebetter sights, although, out of the box,the factory setup is very adequet. The only workI would do, if any, would be to thin out the front blade,as opposed to widening the rear notch.
FWIW, I shoot fairly decent as compared to the masses in our area, BUT,(big but here) I consistantly get out shot by a GIRL  shooting a traditions Crocket in .32!
now there is one little accurate gun!
