Pistol Kit

Hi, I am interested in building a flintlock pistol kit. I have no experience with building them and no idea what to buy. Anybody know of any good kits that are easy and can get me started? :hmm:

The easiest answer is to check out the Traditions line. If you are looking for something more period correct the kits will be a little more difficult to do. You can try Dixie Gun works or Track of the Wolf for some variety and options.

I just put together a Pedersoli Kentucky pistol kit. Mine was percussion, but they also carry flintlock. I purchased throudh Dixie Gun Works. It came out beautifully, but prepare yourself for alot of work on the brass. The instructions stink, but most of the assembly and machining are self evident.

I second the Pedersoli. Mine was really easy to build, and I love it.

The only real problem I encountered with the Pedersoli kit was the line up of the nipple with the hammer. The nipple was in too close to the barrel for full engagement. It waould hit the nipple, but off center. I would have liked to move the hammer in, but that is impossible so I han to make up shims to bring the nipple out one turn. The thickness was critical so that I could get 1 complete turn for the hammer to strike the nipple squarely. I blued the shims and thus they are just barely noticeable. It would have been a better kit if the factory had not preinstalled the thimbles. They were a nightmare to remove.
Have you fired yours yet? My range is closed this weekend so I have to wait a bit longer.

That is a great example of building your own kit from a company like Pedersoli.
You can "customize" it.
Customizing it not only makes it totally unique, but it gives the builder experiance which is impossible to get by reading books or even Forums.

I built the Flintlock version of the Pedersoli Kentucky pistol years ago and can say that building it was a lot of fun. (Another thing about the Flintlock: There isn't an alignment problem between the Cock (hammer) and the barrels nipple because there is no nipple on the barrel.)

 

Yeah, I did neglect to mention that little tidbit about the inlays... which, btw, are the first inlays I ever did, and Zonie was a really big help getting me through those. :bow:

I have fired mine a bunch of times... I try to shoot it every time I hit the range. I don't care for the tall sights on it, and am considering replacing them with something a little lower and more traditional, and the trigger is heavy, but other than that it shoots great. Goes off so fast it's like shooting a caplock, and is very accurate. And, like Zonie said, if you build a flint, you don't have those pesky hammer to nipple alignment issues.

Hey well thanks for the help, I like the pictured one and it sounds like a good kit so I might consider buying it. Going to keep searching the web! :hmm:
