Most of the time I dont shoot the PD issue sidearm. I shoot my .62 flint pistol or my 58 Remington. Those two guns have done more to develop my shooting skills than the issued gun.
Plus its a lot more fun. Its great to run through a tactical course with the 1858 and out shoot the modern shooters.
A great deal of shooting with these is done with "weak" hand as well as one arm. Good skill to have "in the day" as well as now.
I set up a simulated dual for the guys last month. 2 people targets at 15 yards. have shooters stand at low ready right next to each other. On the targets we have predesignated "kill" or "injury" locations. Do the standard ready, aim, fire. Only let one fire. Once the first one fires the other stops to see how the shot was. If it is an injury or miss, the 2nd shooter is allowed to take a slow shot and will typically win the match. Nice way to mix the old into the new.
