Very nice box Silver Fox but probably a little more fancier than my thoughts. The insides are what I'm looking for though. I really want a box similar to those in use around 1810, would like to go for that look.

Swampy

Old silverware boxed sets, the boxes can be found empty and can make a nice cased set size.

Made some that way, looked good, never took any pictures.

That case looks beautiful! Where did you find the hardware? What types of wood and joints did you use?

I've made a number of these. The top panel on this one is made of butternut (I probably won't use it again because it is too soft) and edged with "birds eye" maple. The sides and interior dividers are black walnut and the bottom (base) is mahogany. All of the joints are mitered and the hardware came from a company called Lee Valley tools. www.leevalleytools.com. Although this company is Canadian, they do a mail order business in the States and ship from New York state. Please feel free to PT me if you need any additional information.

I just got back the reclaimed American Chestnut Bucktales gave me. Had it cut in 1" boards then planed. Ended up with 7 boards, some of which I'm pretty sure needs to end up being used for a pistol case. :hmm: Looks and smells good I know that.

The Possible Shop has these. I don't know if it is big enough for what you want but the inside can be customized.

The 18¼"L X 9¼"W box has two thick layers of foam to hold item(s) securely in place and can be removed to ensure proper fit of larger items. Rich wood grain and red velveteen make the display box just as appealing as the item(s) inside. Dual hinges ensure easy opening and double locking latches ensure security. Whether you mount it on a wall (mounting holes are pre-drilled) or simply set it on a table top, the Traditions™ Glass Topped box is perfect for pistols, revolvers, knifes, coins, and any other collectibles.

Order No. 53-1831 Price $49.95

:) Ooooohh, that's nice;I've never worked with chestnut before, can't get it around here. Looks like it will make a beautiful case. By the way, I noticed a wooden shooting box in your pictures, did you make it or buy it?

Theres a member here that makes them and posts them from time to time in the classifieds. I liked the looks of it so I bought one.

The sides on that particular box were three quarters of an inch thick.

Thanks Silver Fox.

I been experimentin and I'm liking the results so far.

Wanting to see how Nitrate of Iron looked on this chestnut, I quickly sanded smooth a spot on one of the end boards and wiped on some NoI. The second pic shows it after it dried and I hit it with a heat gun. I've got a coat of finish on it right now and it really looks good, will post it after a few coats dry. I think it will make a very sweet box for the pistols.

The lighting sucks in here for pictures of things like this but the quick stain/finish test tells me this is the way to go.
