hmmm, I been thinking of installing a belt hook on my CVA Hawken pistol and ya'll just pretty much talked me out of the idea.

Were I you, I'd do it anyway if that's what you like or need. Not everything from Spain was krappola, though a fair percentage may qualify. If it's a pistol you like to shoot, a belt hook isn't a major project.

I would think the belt hook would need to have a very tight fit against the pistol. So when you slide it over the belt to pull it off it about snaps against the stock. To noisy for the hunting woods unless you take it off very slowly,or before sitting and lay it across your lap or hold it.
I picture it more of just a hands free carry device.

C-Lee. I would pass on the belt hook if I were you. It sounds like a good idea but if you spent some time finishing the pistol, a belt hook keeps the pistol in an exposed situation and flopping around. Wander through underbrush and the branches can scrath up the gun's finish. The pistol is better protected in a holster. Storing a pistol with a belt hook is also problematic because the hook sticks out and the pistol doesn't lie flat in a box or drawer. I'm not sure but I think belt hooks were used mostly by naval forces. The "man battleship" was sounded and you grabbed a pistol out of a rack- quickly stuck it in your belt- and then went topside to do battle with the enemy who might be boarding your ship.
In any event I THOUGHT I wanted a belt hook until I tried using one and I didn't like it- of course opinions vary.
While we are on this subject- I've always liked the look of the ramrods on a swivel- seen on some pistols. You can't lose the ramrod- you pull it out and then swivel it up to ram the ball- if anyone has such a feature on a single shot pistol- tell us how you like or dislike it.

Captive ramrod.

Belt hooks were quite common and useful, and on some guns required as on an all-metal Scottish flintlock pistol that would be hung upon one of one's leather straps (and thrown at your enemy as a last ditch effort).

Not to start something---but, holsters worn on body are a quite new fad. 200 yr. ago or more holsters hung on the pommel (front of saddle) pistols had belt hooks, not all by any means but some. The pistol is jammed under your belt/sash & the hook is to the outside. NO flopping around. Anyone sporting a belt holster & dressed as an early persona mite get a look or 3....As late as "wild bill's" day he wore his 36's in a sash......Tom
