Pitting is the result of the fowling and or rust eating away the metal causing small pits in the barrel. Just like cavities in teeth.
Thoroughly cleaning out the barrel and applying a protective coating after a days shooting will prevent this.

Don't despair! A pitted barrel, even badly so, may yet have a new life waiting for it. Rather like a beat-up clunker car can be remade into something powerful and awesome.

This guy, Bobby Hoyt, can rebore rifles. I have a badly pitted .54 I got burned on. Although he hasn't looked at it yet, he is pretty sure he can recut the rifling a bit and keep the .54 caliber. I'll just use bigger balls and thicker patch. If need be, he can rebore it to .58 and then I'll really have a deer thumper!

I will no longer turn down rusted bores because I know I can turn them into something else. All I will do is try to get them at a cheaper prices to cover the costs of a recut/rebore.
