Fellow I know just got a used Italian caplock rifle. Besides other minor problms, it has some kind of buildup in the barrel. I cleaned it at the range for him using patches & water, but the borelight still shows fibrous stuff hanging in the bore. I suspect someone used plastic sabots or (horrors) synthetic material patches. I was going to attack it w/ acetone & a brush, but does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning out this stuff? We are a fur piece from any fancy sportin' goods store, so it would have to be something fairly common.

I'd hit it heavy with a brass bore brush to loosen it up and maybe follow with some 0000 steel wool.

I use Birchwood Casey 2 in 1 bore scrubber. It's formulated to remove copper, lead, and plastic from wads. Seems to work and at least its designed for guns. :hatsoff:

If the bore brush and the steel wool don't get it, your right, the acetone should get the worst of it.
The problem with acetone is it will desolve the plastic and redeposite the melted plastic in the bore so it might have to be done several times.

It is also bad for your liver (so I've been told) and can be absorbed thru the skin and lungs.
It also will eat any finish off the wood so I would suggest that you remove the barrel before messing with it.

Course that fiberous stuff might be mold from a lack of use?
