LongRifleVaB,

Mike Brooks, who has answered in response to this thread puts together Chambers kits in the white. Might want to PM him for a time frame. Check out his fowlingguns.com link under his profile.

Or look at the Virginia rifle that Mike offers?

For what its worth, I am not a big fan of brass patch boxes and surrounds on high grade stocks. The stockes have great figuring, and fiddleback, and Why would you want to hide it behind a bunch of plate brass? ( or silver) The Virginia rifles are probably the most correct for that period of time, but I think you should be thinking more about building a gun you will be shooting, a lot, and not putting so much emphasis on a show piece. Just my $.02.

I want to agree with Paul, not a huge fan of the big gaudy patch boxes. But what if you were to go with something a little more sleek. Something along the lines of a lil bigger then a silver dollar (think T/C). Big enough to fit a few cleaning items or a spare shot in but nothing that would obscure a lot of wood. I've been tossing around the idea of a wire inlay where a box would normally go, nothing crazy just a clean simple little design (3" x 2" max i think).

The more I look at the southern mtn. guns the more I like them. I'm considering building one of these. They seem a bit more unique shape wise. All I've seen people carry in real life before coming to the forum was either Hawkens or PA's. And even now there are only a few other types, I don't think I've seen anybody admit to using a southern mtn. gun. But then again I'm not going for a strictly revolutionary period gun.

Judging from the above posts I would assume it's ok to go with a straight barrel on a southern mtn. gun. I'm interested in a Rice match grade. I've heard good things about Rice but no one mentions their match grade barrels. I'm not overly concerned about the balance aspect of using a swamp, worst case i bore a hole in the buttstock and put some lead in there under the buttplate. But it would be nice to have a PC gun and still use a straight match grade barrel.

"You guys have no idea how helpful you have been'

Probably helpfull in creating more questions than were asked...this is a great forum to learn from, there are some of the best builders/gun history buffs around hanging out here, Your approach to looking at a lot of options and weighing the differences against what you are looking for in a gun is a good way to go, it hurts when one jumps in and buys first and ask questions, later most of us have been there, I am sure Mat can build a fine gun to suit your needs and be as HC as you want to go as can many other buiders on this forum, good luck doing the research and making the choice, that is half the fun of this sport.
