A few months ago I mentioned I had made a post on ncdeer.com offering a hands on range/training session for anybody within reasonable driving distance of me here in NC was interested in learning about Flintlocks...got a taker, had a good range session, etc.

Started getting some Email questions since then which ultimately led to his purchase of a good used TC Hawken .45cal Flintlock...I'm going to update the old style lock for him with spare parts I already have on hand and help him get outfitted...ie: an elk antler pan primer I've used for a couple years, powder, patches, balls, etc..

He's excited to get started shooting regularly...makes me feel good that the offer a few months ago ended up with a new Flintlock shooter...and sooner or later, maybe he'll get one of his buddies to try it, etc...sort of fits with the credo of this website: "keeping tradition alive"

I'm kinda the same way

I drive up to the mountains to an area popular for shooting, and I always get some people who are a little interested in what the muzzleloaders are about.
Of course I always load one up and let them pop off a few rounds out of my Spanish Hawken.
Most people prefer the Remington revolver though.

Almost always I hear things like "This is fun, I should go and get one of these!"

very good rb fer reinforcing our ranks :applause: :hatsoff: ..........bob

Way to go. Glad you had some responce. Who know;s maybe you will get some more people e-mailing you wanting to start. Be a way to thin out the gun safe. Just give a T/C flintlock to each one. Hey, i wanna start shooting ML'ers.

roundball,
Just shows they are out there, we just
have to find a way to contact them. The
MLF is a start but in realality we all need to
get involved. You are making the effort, myself
and the rest need to think of some unique way to
attract new shooters, young and old alike. :hatsoff: to you for your effort.
snake-eyes :applause:

Ir gets better...he just let me know that while rumaging around through some old boxes of stuff left over from his Dad, he found a can of Goex 2F and 3F...plus some pieces of elk antler...is going to order fittings from October Country to make his own elk antler pan primer...sounds like he's got the fever for sure...I also gave him the MLF's URL

I think Claude should start an incentive program:
The moderators each get a 10% pay increase over their current MLF salary for every new ML enthusiast we get started, and we get a free MLF membership!

That's a great thing to do. Very generous to offer your time to help a new flintlocker, especially a hands on help session at the range. You've helped me on different occasions on this forum and on the PT forum. I always look forward to reading your opinions on the different topics that get posted. Great job.

I gotta second that.

Hey Roundball, I thought there were laws over your way preventing people from supplying others with drugs of addiction. Eventually this poor soul will be consumed with his Black Powder addiction, it will take up all his spare time (and money), his family life will suffer, sooner or later he'll end up in rehab, if he's lucky. Keep an eye out for the tell-tale signs of BP residue around the nostrils. Black Powder or white powder..... the outcome is still the same. You should be ashamed of yourself. :rotf:

Seriously, well done! :hatsoff:

I have a fellow coming to our range this Sunday for the same reason. He joined our BP & Pistol club recently to shoot pistol but was instantly drawn to the sound & smoke of BP rifle. I'll set him up to shoot the BP Rifle club championship, he's never shot BP before. I was sucked into the vortex the same way last year.

Smokey.

Thanks for your concern about the Moderators pay but I would have to turn it down.
A raise in my current MLF pay would put me into a Lower Tax bracket.

I teach a lot of new shooters. Many of them go on to qualify for concealled handgun licences and enjoy various aspects of our sport. I've began taking some of them out for black powder days. I know that for myself, the addiction was almost instant when I took my first shot. It's interesting to see that it has that effect on a lot of other folks too.

A few of my friends are heavily into the modern guns, the more modern the better, the more plastic the better. These have always been the ones to show no interest in muzzleloaders. Until they try them! Of course many have gone out and bought inlines, but they are slowly coming around. One of them took two years, but he sold his inline and is looking to get a T/C sidelock. It's a start.

As long as we keep doing our share, showing others our sport, sharing history about it as we can (my weak point), and being inviting, we'll keep getting new folks. It's the most addictive form of shooting there is.

I love to see threads like this one! :)

I stand guilty as charged. Roundball has been nothing but extremely helpful. I just signed up today and am anxious to get started shooting this thing.

Hi, my name is GrizzlyBear and I am an addict! :)

Seriously though, my tendencies have always been to appreciate the older things....I shot a deer last year with a 100+ year old swedish mauser. I'm also interested in moving my archery hunting to more traditional equipment (recurve) and I've always been interested in shooting more.

I have a T/C Hawken 50 cal (percussion) that my dad and I made in high school. Took my first deer with it. Browned barrel hand rubbed oil finish, etc.

I have a 45 cal T/C pistol and an 1958 replica revolver too.

But, this is my FIRST flintlock.

Thanks Roundball.

Great job Roundball, anytime we can keep em' away from inlines and get em' shooting traditional is a good day indeed.
