Polishing a Spontoon the old way

What was used by smiths to polish something like a spontoon? I've got a spontoon from the Rifle Shoppe and want to polish it the old way (if possible)

i heard brick dust, from bricks 1800's or older, was what some smiths used back down in the day.

Certainly no expert here and just my thoughts. You could try pumice or rotten stone (local hardware store). I have good luck using some of the above rubbed on a piece of soft pine and burnishing/polishing iron and wood..
