What was used by smiths to polish something like a spontoon? I've got a spontoon from the Rifle Shoppe and want to polish it the old way (if possible)
 
Certainly no expert here and just my thoughts. You could try pumice or rotten stone (local hardware store). I have good luck using some of the above rubbed on a piece of soft pine and burnishing/polishing iron and wood..

Thanks! As soon as I thaw out from the ice storm, I'll see about getting set up to finish polishing this thing.
