Possible RMC vent issues

I found a wooden skewer we had in the kitchen drawer its relatively thick and works. The toothpick was too small. Ill use that until I get the replacement.

A pipe cleaner (smoking pipe, of course) works just fine. The ones I have are a little snug going into the RMC liners on my guns. But a slight twisting motion gets it done, and keeps the touch hole clean.

I got a pack of "Interdental Brushes" - they're made to clean out under dental bridgework & look like tiny bore brushes. They work great for scrubbing out nipples & also fit just fine into a touch hole.

That's a pretty good ideal. I received the new liner on Saturday and he also included a Lyman replacement which is brass. Lyman's original is not brass.

Load over a white surface, a pretty big one. 3 to 5 grains by weight is a lot of powder to lose out a vent unless its large, .080 or larger.

I sent my oversized RMC Vent Liner back to the Company. Haven`t heard anything yet. If I remember correctly. I got it sometime in late February. Wait and see.....

On the left is the new one, the right is the old one. Is it typical for them to blow out so soon?

Actually, it's not as big of a job as it sounds. When I bought my first White Lightnin' liner, I also bought the kit consisting of a drill bit and a tap to install the White Lightnin' liner. I removed the old liner, chucked the bit in my drill press and drilled out the old hole, then replaced the bit with the tap and tapped the hole and then screwed in the White Lightnin' liner. It is about a 5 minute job. I prefer the White Lightnin' liner and think it worth the small bit of trouble to replace my old liners with White Lightnin' liners. Of course, if you don't have the tools, avoid White Lightnin' liners. :hatsoff:

That just ain't normal. If you have rapid erosion of your touch hole, it often only happens with really hot loads. A really hot load will produce a longer jet of hot gasses out of the touch hole which erodes and enlarges the hole. If you are using a hot load, you ought to consider reducing it.

It would depend on the caliber of your rifle but for any rifle of .40 caliber or larger, 65 grains is not a hot load. If you had a .32 or .36 caliber rifle, 65 grains might be pushing the top end of the recommended load range and be considered a hot load.

65 grains of 3f definitely is not a hot load for a .50 cal. No idea what is causing the erosion. You don't poke steel wire into the touch hole and wiggle it around to clean it, do you, It's my last guess. After that, I am out of ideas. :idunno:

No. My vent pick is an extremely thin piece of wire that I don't use much. With the RMC vent, I didn't have to clear the hole.

Okay, I'm tapped out. Someone smarter than me (and that won't be hard) :haha: will have to answer your question.

The liner on the right is either a manufacturing defect or someone has drilled it out.

Even a low carbon steel vent liner would take hundreds of shots to even begin to show that much erosion.

Seems kinda odd that they were both bought on E-Bay? I`m pretty sure that mine was only shot maybe only 30 times. I use a Paper Clip fashioned into a T`Hole Pick. Didn`t drill it out and I`m thinking a Manufacter`s defect.

It has to be a defect. I don't own a drill and the liner was in original packaging untouched. I think I may contact the folks at RMC, show them the pic, see what they say.

I don't know what a "RMC" liner is but I had pretty much the same problem once. I made a liner and recessed the inside. I installed the liner and filed the outside flush with the barrel. I then shot it a few times and the touch hole blew out. I figure I filed the face paper thin and it lasted only a few shots before it blew. I changed the liner out being sure not to drill the inside cone as deep as the last one. I've made many liners since and I've not had this problem again.
