This is my first post over here. I'm looking to make a possibles bag out of a deer hide that I'm tanning. I would like to pattern it after an early frontiersman's type of bag. I've found several pictures on the internet that I think I can mimic, but would prefer a pattern to follow. Can anyone send me a pattern or know where I can find one? Thanks.

For my first bag, my shootin' buddy & I first made a pattern from heavy brown paper - like from a paper bag and then transfered that to chipboard. [The kind of cardboard that used to be on the back of the pencil tablets.]
We looked at alot of different sources, as you have, for the styles and 'look' we wanted and then tried to figure out the size from the description and/or picture.
We used tape and staples to fasten the pieces together and we learned alot about the order of assembly and manipulating the different thickness of materials.
If you can, put the stuff you will put in the real bag into the mock-up. See if your hand fits, maybe a slight change in the curve will fit the priming horn better - maybe the bag needs to be deeper so you can hang a knapping hammer or short starter inside the bag.
Make your second bag fancy.

Madison Grants book "The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch"! The only source you should need for years

Good Luck, Pathfinder

"The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch"!

this book will have patterns in it and such...............bob

it will show you bag styles.that bag is one my list of things to get this winter

Welcome!

Volume 6 of the Book of Buckskinning series has the best "how to" and background info for making a pouch that I have run across. Madison Grant's book has lots of good images, but no instructions.

My favorite is based on this image out of his book:

As far as a pattern. The front is the shape of the bag. Add 1/4" for a seam if you're turning it inside-out afterwards to hide the seam. The back is just like the front but with the flap. The strap is 1 to 2" wide and as long as it takes to go over your shoulder. Punch six holes on each end of the strap and lace it to the bag with a strip of leather and you can have some adjustment built in. Button closure is optionsl ~ the larger trhe flap the less it needs a button. 8" X 8" is big enough for everything you need. Mine is 6-1/2" wide and 7-1/2" tall. It's shaped more like the original above when it's empty, but "rounds out" considerably with my cra . . . accoutrements.

Has a button, is moose leather lined with block-printed muslin and pipe edged with buckskin (NOT fringed). The strap is jute (mine has a buckle). There is one tiny pocket on the front panel big enough for two flints. On the back outside is a sheath I can either put a ball-block oor patch knife in (the patch knife has a hard pig lleather sheath liner that slips into the softer moose sheath). Other than that it's just a big, single pocket.

Use grocery bag paper to work out the pattern you like.

Here's a page from the G.Gedney Godwin cataloh that shows some flap ideas.

Wow! Thanks guys, this should be enough to get me started. You just might have helped another person get addicted to this. I live in an area where F&I War encampments and demonstrations take place. Once I get my buckskins and pouches ready, I just might sign up.
