Possibles bags and how the straps are attached

I was given this bag about 15 years ago and I love the darn thing. Notice how the leather strap is attached to the sides rather than the back. This allows me to fold the cover behind the bag and not have to mess with it while at the range. I havent seen many bags made like this, and I cant figure out why. I would like to add more bags to my collection that are made like this, but I cant seem to find them. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Lots of bags were done that way. Most British shotgun shell bags are like that

I make my own , and use "D" rings on the back of the bag. Attach the strap to the back , and add an extra inch of width to the cover flap to keep weather out.

I prefer the straps on the side as the bag will hang closer to the body in my experience.

I personally don't make my bags with gussets (primarily double pouch) and I use softer medium-heavy weight hides but I find that sewing the strap flat with a slight angle makes them hang better on my not so svelte anymore figure...

You see this arrangement with the straps on many of the European bags, old and new.

Both of these designs are interesting and have advantages I might look to incorporate in my next bag.
