Yup. The Saltpeter (Potassium Nitrate, chemically KNO 3) provides the oxygen with those 3 oxygen molicules (the O 3) for the reaction.

IMO, compressing Black Powder will not slow down its burning rate, which is why a lot of the Black Powder Cartridges we aren't supposed to talk about on this Forum, use heavily compressed loads and work just fine. ::

Yes, and for years, as a means of achieving consistent load seating pressures, I seat a patched ball as firmly as I can and will hear the sound of the powder crunch traveling up through the ramrod...couldn't be more pleased with the results
