I only poured a couple of pewter end caps and they were on full stocks. My question is on a half-stock is the best way to inlet the entry pipe before or after pouring the end cap. For the life of me I've tried to think it through and still perplexed. Can anyone help please?

I’d inlet the pipe then carve the area of the cap. Place a close fitting wood rod in the pipe and make the form to pour the cap. After pouring remove the rod and shape the cap.

I have only done one but it worked out good with inletting the entry pipe first.

Make sure you heat up the barrel before you make your pour. A cold barrel will cause the pewter to solidify as it makes contact and you could wind up with wrinkles in it if you don't.

Heat a bolt that fits in the barrel loosely. Put the bolt in the barrel ,let it hang ther by its head. Wait a few minutes for it to heat the barrel up. Remove the bolt a few seconds before pouring.
