just a random question,i have noticed a small amount of BP(any grain size)seems to go up so quick(when lit with a lighter on the ground) you singe the hair on the hand wielding the lighter.smokeless on the other hand, seems to take forever to consume.i know confinement increases reaction time, but why the open air burn difference?inquiring minds like to know, thanks.

That's a big can of worms, and one of the reasons Black Powder is classified as an explosive, and smokeless including the faux BP's are classified as propellants.
To be honest I understand it all but I ain't a good enough explainer to make it into simple statement.

The reason for the slow burn rate of smokeless is that it has to be under pressure to burn fast. If you were to put black and smokeless in containers with say 10,000 PSI on each before ignition you would see quite a different result. Necchi is exactly right about the difference in the classification of the powders and the reason that it requires a different (explosives) license to sell black powder.
